We are very happy to finish this week with the news that we have been longlisted in the company of some great projects in this year's Don't Move, Improve!

For a small practice focusing on small-scale residential and community-led projects, we have relatively few opportunities to showcase our work, so the chance to be recognised amongst these talented practices is wonderful.

Every project is a labour of love so we're looking forward to seeing what our entry will be next year!

A great way to end the week with sunshine AND news of another successful planning application in a Conservation Area.🌞

This project will see a 1 bed flat converted into a 3 bed duplex with a living space that will connect beautifully to the lush garden.

A great way to future-proof a starter home and allow our clients to put their own stamp on their long term home. Looking forward to the next steps, but that can wait until Monday 🥂

This time last year, following the appointment of 's Diversity and Inclusion Manager we decided to join the RIBA as fully paid up professional members. This means we have a lovely red sign to put up on our sites :-)

Unlike the *, the RIBA is optional for Architects.

As the RIBA gets serious about social cohesion, innovation in architecture and working towards a more sustainable built environment it seemed like the right time to join after many years of reluctance.

It's good to see that positive change can happen even within established institutions and we look forward to seeing more relevant design and inclusive environments because of it.

*Side note: Always check that your Architect is a registered member of the ARB before you employ them, or they really aren't an Architect at all!

Balancing natural and artificial light is something we are all thinking about as the days get shorter. But this time of year should also be about embracing the variety of light conditions and enjoying the seasonal change. 🍂

Design can help: a good natural & artificial lighting strategy works with changing conditions throughout the day and year to help define different types of space, from cosy nooks to flexible entertaining space.

Our modern refurbishment of a traditional Edwardian house aims to do just this. Careful lighting design offers occupants the opportunity to create different moods within a large open area, whilst also highlighting some of the best bits of the existing house and garden for a luxurious feel to a busy family home.

We love colour and we aren't afraid to use it.🎨

Your interior design choices should work with your architecture for the best results and so it can be a real advantage to have your Architect provide interior design services in addition to architectural and project management services.

Our holistic design process offers the option to do just that for a more design-led solution approach to the whole project. It's our preferred way of working and can mean a much higher quality final result than most clients would expect for their budgets.

Any thoughts on whether it was the print or the paint that was first here? And does it matter? We think so, but we'd rather let you make up your own mind 🤔😉

Thanks to .spaces for the snap.

Up in lights at last, as part of the in . Our community-design project, 'Neon Knights' has been an amazing opportunity to work with a diverse group of residents to create a shared artwork to brighten up the station underpass in Romford.

Designed to bring together symbols that represent the neighbourhood, we've gone from games and story-telling to design and symbolism to manufacture in a way that proves that design-by-cooperation really is possible.

And yes, that is sheep eating a fried breakfast and a goose drinking a pint. 🐑

Swipe👉 for more process shots including our design workshop and see www.illusionarium.co.uk for more on the festival and to read all about the urban design roots and theory behind the artwork.

A huge thanks to all of our fellow artist-residents on this one too and thanks to for the final snaps and all the hard work to see this installed.

Every problem is an opportunity and never more so in design. The best and most unique solutions tend to come from the creative problem solving process, just as with our answer to an existing, awkwardly placed and unsafe stair.

Our approach? Celebrate and enhance its awkward position and allow a constraint to become the key to a beautiful space.

We'll be publishing more on this approach so keep a look out 👀

Thanks to .spaces for capturing this angle🙏

Successful refurbishment projects rely on knowing what to remove, what to add and what to highlight in a way that brings out the best and sometimes hidden qualities of a space.

Whilst it's often easier to go for wholesale change, achieving a beautiful space with a number of existing constraints is often more rewarding and far more sustainable in a world where we need to balance our desire for well-being with concern for our impact.

Thanks to
For capturing the old, new and the blue.

Even the smallest spaces can feel a little luxurious when care is taken with design, materials and proportions.

This bathroom was planned into an existing cupboard space with a very limited footprint. By adding light and height above and utilising simple materials as well as some design tricks, we've created a sense of space without needing to steal space or budget from other parts of the house.

Thanks to .spaces for capturing the details and for somehow managing to stay invisible! 🤔🙏
