Staircase to Exordium is a student-led art installation and the only UK-based recipient of a Burning Man 2025 Honoraria grant. Created by a team of Master's in Architecture students at the University of Westminster, the piece explores transformation, reflection, and new beginnings. Drawing from the ethos of Burning Man, creativity, connection, and community, the installation invites participants t

o shift perspective, embrace change, and step into the unknown. Built from off-the-shelf timber and designed for sustainability, Staircase to Exordium is prefabricated in London and will be assembled on the playa before disappearing without a trace. It is both a sculptural structure and a cultural statement, a moment of pause in a landscape of constant motion. With your support, we can make it real, and you’ll be with us every step of the way. See some of the detail drawings behind Staircase to Exordium.

The design is anchored by three guiding principles; the consistent reduction of each layer, the number of arrays around the circle and the preservation of material thickness.

Through studying various combinations, a clear correlation was observed: increasing both the number of arrays and the percentage reduction amplified the growth of the exponential curve, resulting in the design we have today.
