Green Lodge - STYLUS ARCHITECTS

A calm and carefully crafted kitchen at Green Lodge, where natural materials, soft light and simple forms create a sense of quiet permanence.

The oak joinery and monolithic worktop are framed by a generous rooflight, drawing daylight deep into the heart of the home while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding landscape of Putney Heath.

Green Lodge - a new build home on Putney Heath, designed as a calm retreat embedded within its landscape.

Soft natural light, tactile materials and carefully framed views work together to create spaces that feel both warm and understated. The interiors embrace a restrained palette, allowing texture, proportion and connection to the garden to take centre stage.
Part of a substratum house in Wandsworth, the project explores how contemporary architecture can feel quietly grounded within its setting.

Green Lodge, located between Putney Heath and Roehampton in London - a contemporary home shaped by landscape, light, and subterranean living.

Natural timber cladding, soft landscaping, and carefully framed openings create a calm architectural language that feels both private and deeply connected to nature. The design explores split-level and partially subterranean living, drawing natural light deep into the home while creating a strong relationship between interior spaces and the surrounding garden. A restrained palette of timber, planting, and refined detailing gives the project a warm and timeless character.

At Green Lodge, the stair is conceived not simply as circulation, but as architecture itself.

Positioned directly beneath the large rooflight, it forms a vertical connection through the house, linking the living spaces above with the lower ground floor below while drawing natural light deep into the centre of the plan.

As the light shifts throughout the day, the stair and surrounding walls become animated by shadow, texture and changing tone, reinforcing the relationship between volume, movement and materiality. The result is a sculptural element that is both functional and spatially integral to this new build house in south west London.

Green Lodge — a new build house in south west London.

The joinery is conceived almost as a series of smaller architectural volumes within the wider open-plan space, framing views, concealing storage and creating moments of intimacy beneath the large rooflight above.

Rather than being applied to the interior, the oak lining becomes part of the architecture itself; bringing warmth, rhythm and human scale to the raw concrete structure and generous volume of the room.

Green Lodge is defined by a single, coherent architectural language, where structure, material and proportion are resolved as one unified whole. Fair-faced concrete spine walls read in dialogue with external horizontal concrete bands, which articulate the internal floor levels across the façade. Bespoke timber frames are consistently expressed inside and out, while larch cladding extends this material continuity.
