MFA are proud to be part of the Old House Project with the SPAB and we are excited to be presenting our work there as part of COP26! Do join us online if you can.
How do you repair a medieval house in a sustainable way? 🌍 We're proud to continue the long tradition of using local, long-life and recycled building materials at our Old House Project in Kent.
One of the ways we've done this is to build a field kiln in the garden. We can prepare our own mortars, so we never make more than we need. The kiln is made from soil from the garden with some straw, water and quicklime. The structure is incredibly efficient; while temperature reach over 1000 Celsius inside, the kiln remains cool to the touch on the outside. In the kiln we've burnt locally-sourced grey chalk to make quicklime which we've used in our repairs.
The project is a demonstration of the SPAB Approach to building conservation which we believe is inherently compatible with environmental sustainability.
Join project architect Malcolm Fryer, Marianne Suhr (co-author of the SPAB’s Old House Eco Handbook) and others on Monday 8 November, 6-8pm where they will discuss decisions at the Old House Project around materials, insulation choices, heating options and much more.
