The proposal is an attempt to bring back the landscape into the site, rather than have the buildings expand. The suggested intervention builds on a subtle reordering of the existing structure with the aim of integrating the cottage more with the site. This will be done in a few ways: firstly, the removal of the outbuildings will allow for a better integration of the cottage with its natural surroundings. Removing the annex at the back will restore the original shape of the cottage, and the footprints of the demolished buildings will be converted into functioning gardens, with as much of the rubble reused as building materials where possible.

A single-story extension will be added to the cottage, integrating the footprint of an adjacent games room to the cottage. The extension will enjoy higher ceilings and will accommodate the new kitchen, dining area and utility room. A new ensuite master bedroom will be placed in the current living room and will have a terrace looking out to the river. The stair is moved to the extension of the cottage, becoming a feature with custom built-in furniture The extension aims to look like a garden wall, emphasising the importance of integrating it into the surrounding landscape.

On now until Sunday 20th June. A short film taking viewers through the "Together we care' Installation. More than 100 people participated in this project. Refugee and non-refugee families, students and professionals from different countries made dolls’ houses that tell their stories of home, community and belonging. By linking the dolls’ houses with ropes and ramps and ladders the project aims to explore the meaning of home and community after a year of COVID19 restrictions and the isolation these caused, while highlighting the experience of being a refugee in an attempt to create solidarity and understanding across the political and socio-economic divide.

Part of Refugee Week 2021.

Delighted to see our community arts initiative - The Giant Dolls' House project - featured in the Financial Times.

The project asks its participants to create a miniature roomscape in a box. The dioramas are then displayed en masse as an installation, linked by ropes, ladders and ramps in a colourful cardboard maze that muses on the meaning of home.

To get involved this year visit www.giantdollshouse.org and submit your roomscape in a box, as part of Refugee Week (14 to 20 June), the deadline for submissions has been extended to 14th June 2021.

Exploring how we select which rainpipe to use for our house and why.

When building a house, it seems nowadays this creates as many choices as there are in a supermarket: you draw what you want and we can build it. The supermarket has at least pre-packaged items. You want potato crisps? Narrow it down to organic, slightly salted, healthy and a few brands remain.

With rainpipes it is different and there are a few routes - more information on link.

What if we couldn’t see the building on a site? This could be the task of architects in the country. Let’s make them invisible through dressing them in cloaks of greenery. Like the mirror houses in Sweden, where the green is reflected everywhere and seem invisible and yet are very obviously made of glass when they reflect the sun, or when the birds fly into them (observed by Jennifer Frewen). The house should be the tree perhaps. See the rest of this blog on our website - link below.
