Thank you to for hosting the 2026 All Ireland Architecture Research Group conference, where Rachel presented ongoing design-research focusing on as a way of testing thresholds between the river and the city, and the discoveries made through collaborating with sound artist

A lovely opportunity to present in the same session as our fellow river advocates with whom we always have enriching discussions about developing our creative engagement with the river.

Thank you to keynote for the inspiring talk describing the fascinating work behind Terra Forma and Gaiagraphie

About this album

In advance of Matilde Meireles’s Four Tales, this single contains an alternative edit of tale Two. Two (Another Way) is an improvisation based on a series of loops of made from movements of water; raw electromagnetic pulses recorded with an electromagnetic sensor and a VLF antenna; electromagnetic pulses transformed into drones, rhythmic pulses and imagined animal calls.

While Two created a continuous sonic journey between two locations along the River Lagan, Belfast, Two (Another Way) suggests that listening itself can unfold in multiple ways, uncovering different sonic flows within the urban-aquatic entanglements at the heart of Four Tales.

Two emerged from the listening sessions Matilde created for DRIFT, a collaborative floating architectural installation and public space that fostered new perspectives on city-river connections along Belfast’s River Lagan during summer 2024. Commissioned by Belfast City Council, DRIFT brought together OGU Architects, MMAS Architects and Matilde Meireles.

In summer 2024 we were lucky enough to create a project on the River Lagan - - for Belfast2024 () with and . Our friends at also created an incredible project for Belfast2024 on the river called Waterworks. This has sparked many enriching conversations between us. One delightful outcome has been that Rachel () has co-created a ‘satellite’ exhibition for .arch Summer Show with architecture students in new exhibition space PS3. The theme is Architecture + Water - (how could it be anything else?) featuring work from all stages and studios at QUB architecture, demonstrating the variety of approaches to water that were explored this year. Furniture is made from upcycled studio waste materials and second-hand water barrels.

A 1:250 model of a city-centre stretch of the Lagan - made by students - sits in the centre of the shop-front gallery space.

Congratulations to for breathing life into a vacant storefront which immediately brings light and friendliness to Rosemary Street.

Special thanks to student volunteers and Yulei.

It was lovely to see the Bishop Street project (2022) settling into its site on a rainy visit to the city today - the weathering steel and game of polished/unpolished concrete suit this kind of weather

Drift: Writing the River

Register for free here: https://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/seamus-heaney-centre/Events/DriftWritingtheRiverwithAliceMalseedandStephenConnollyDayOne.html

Saturday 27th of July, 12:45pm-4pm (Meet at Queen’s PEC, Stranmillis Embankment)
Saturday 10th of August, 10:45am-2pm (Meeting place TBC)

As part of Drift, a Belfast ‘24 project, Alice Malseed and Stephen Connolly will lead two writing workshops exploring our connections with the River Lagan. Participants will walk along parts of the river, documenting the sights, smells and sounds that they encounter, before returning to the Seamus Heaney Centre to create a collage of their discoveries.

These workshops are free and open to all, and we particularly encourage those with no previous writing experience. The first workshop will focus on the areas from Stranmillis Lock to the Ormeau Bridge, and the second will focus on the areas from the Ormeau Bridge to the Lagan Weir.

Participants are welcome to sign up for either of these workshops, or both.
