A lovely day spent at a new customer’s absolutely beautiful garden today. 🌿☀️

The focus was on w**ding the beds and putting a crisp edge back onto the lawn. It’s amazing how much difference a sharp lawn edge makes — a bit like getting a haircut; suddenly everything looks much smarter!

The garden was already looking fantastic and is a real credit to the customer’s previous gardener, who has clearly put a huge amount of time and effort into creating such a wonderful space. I was delighted to help keep things looking their best.

By the end of the day, there were fewer w**ds, sharper edges, and one very satisfied gardener quietly admiring the results before heading home. 🌱💪

Another busy day for the Hockham & Jones team! 🌳

This morning we planted three apple trees, cleared a bed, and laid w**d suppressant matting and cobbles to keep things looking neat and tidy. We’re looking forward to seeing those apple trees grow — although we’re slightly disappointed to discover they don’t come with apples already attached. 🍏

This afternoon we tackled the remainder of an overgrown bed. After battling our way through the jungle, we made an exciting archaeological discovery… a patio! It had been so well hidden we were beginning to think we’d stumbled onto an episode of Time Team.

The final job of the day was w**ding some beds and putting a crisp edge back into the lawn. It’s amazing what a difference a sharp edge makes — a bit like a haircut, but thankfully with fewer awkward conversations.

Another day, another garden transformed.

Back to one of our regular customers in Norwich today for a couple of hours digging out some stubborn fir tree roots from a front bed.

It also gave us the perfect excuse to test out a new spade. We went old-school with a wooden handle — apparently we’re at the age where we have strong opinions about gardening tools, and it just feels better than plastic!

The new spade performed well, but it had some serious competition. We also put my dad’s old shovel to work, which is actually older than I am and still going strong. They certainly don’t make them like that anymore. I’m sure he’d be pleased to know it’s still earning its keep rather than gathering dust in a shed somewhere.

The roots didn’t stand much of a chance against a combination of modern technology and vintage experience.

We’re pleased to announce the latest addition to the Hockham & Jones tool arsenal – a petrol tiller! 🚜

Why? Because spending hours wrestling compacted soil by hand might build character, but it doesn’t do much for efficiency.

Not ones to let new equipment sit around looking pretty, we put it straight to work this morning preparing a planting area and were very pleased with the results. It made light work of the job, produced a great seedbed, and will help us complete similar projects more efficiently in the future.

This new bit of kit means we can prepare beds and borders faster, create better planting conditions, and save valuable time on site – all of which helps us deliver even better value for our customers.

We’re sure the tiller is delighted to have skipped the showroom phase and gone straight into active service!

🚨 New Toy Alert… Sorry, New Professional Equipment Alert! 🚨

At Hockham & Jones, we’re always looking for ways to improve the service we provide, so we’ve added a brand-new mulching mower to the fleet. 🌱

We firmly believe that investing in top-quality tools and equipment helps us deliver the high standards our customers expect. Plus, it means we spend less time wrestling with machinery and more time making gardens look fantastic.

Unlike a conventional mower, a mulching mower finely cuts and recuts the grass clippings before returning them to the lawn. This has several benefits:

✅ Returns valuable nutrients back into the soil
✅ Helps lawns stay greener and healthier
✅ Improves moisture retention during dry weather
✅ Reduces the need to dispose of grass clippings
✅ Gives a neat, professional finish

In other words, your lawn gets fed while having a haircut. If only the barber worked that way for the rest of us! 😄

🌿 We spent the day in bed… 🌿

Before anyone gets too jealous, not that kind of bed. We spent most of today firmly planted in flower beds rather than under a duvet!

Today’s mission saw us visiting several of our regular customers, armed with kneeling pads, hand tools and plenty of determination, tackling w**ds that had clearly mistaken the borders for their own private allotments.

A few hours of pulling, hoeing and tidying later, the beds are back to looking as they should — neat, tidy and ready to show off the plants rather than the w**ds.

The glamorous life of a gardener isn’t always about riding mowers and wielding hedge cutters; sometimes it’s simply a case of getting down and dirty so your garden looks its best.

Another busy day for Hockham & Jones Garden Services Ltd! 🌿☕

This morning we were back with a new customer, continuing our mission to improve the all-important sense of arrival. We finished clearing out beneath the hedge before moving on to tackle the driveway w**ds. The w**ds put up a reasonable fight, but thankfully the customer kept me fuelled with a seemingly endless supply of coffee. I’m fairly certain I left with more caffeine than blood in my veins.

This afternoon was spent helping another new customer get their vegetable garden up and running. We started clearing and preparing the vegetable bed before planting French beans, tomatoes, chilli plants and some colourful geraniums. With a bit of sunshine, careful watering and a few encouraging words, they should soon be thriving.

It’s always rewarding helping customers create gardens they can enjoy throughout the summer.

Another productive day for the Hockham & Jones team, taking on around 400 metres of hedge cutting for one of our regular customers. That’s close to half a kilometre of careful trimming and shaping to keep everything looking neat and well maintained. 🌿✂️

A big thank you to our lovely customer for keeping us fuelled throughout the day with plenty of coffee and a delicious slice of Marks & Spencer Swiss roll. It certainly helped keep us smiling! ☕🍰

The hedges are now looking smart, tidy, and summer-ready. It’s always a pleasure returning to look after the gardens of our regular customers and seeing them looking their best throughout the seasons.

🌱 Operation: Lawn Rescue 🌱

Today’s mission at Hockham & Jones Garden Services Ltd was to give a regular customer’s lawn a fresh start.

We began with a cut, followed by two passes of the scarifier in opposite directions. Judging by the amount of moss and thatch we pulled out, the lawn had apparently been secretly growing its own underlay! 😳

After a second shorter cut, we top dressed the lawn and applied an overseeding mix of grass seed and fertiliser before finishing with a generous watering.

The lawn now looks a little worse before it looks a lot better — which is perfectly normal, despite what the neighbours may think when they peek over the fence! 👀

Now we leave the hard work to the seed and the weather. Our challenge is resisting the urge to keep checking on it every day to see if it’s grown yet… 🌱😂
