I have always been drawn to the Moquette fabric synonymous with public transport upholstery, most notably found on the London Underground. Not only for its’ designs over the years, related to each line or service, but for the tactility of the fabric.
Moquette, named from the French for carpet, is a cut pile fabric, woven on jacquard loom. Not feasible on my loom but I wanted to try and weave something that might capture that desire I have to stroke the fabric and the feeling of comfort and soothing that tactility provides.
Settling on a double weave with areas of a double corduroy structure, and reference the arable countryside of Aberdeenshire and East Lothian, where my point of reference of train/bus journeys lie, I have woven a design which perhaps could, if scaled down, don the seats of my journeys.
While half will be sewn into a cushion for an upstairs window seat, I have plans to frame the other to create a piece for the wall.
