Redeveloping rural sites often requires careful consideration of how new buildings relate to the footprint of existing structures.
For this recent planning approval for six new homes, two of the properties were positioned outside the footprint of the former farm buildings. While development in the open countryside can make this type of approach challenging to justify, it allowed for a more balanced and coherent site layout while remaining sensitive to the rural context.
In this case, the planning officer concluded that the revised siting would not result in visual harm and would sit comfortably within the existing cluster of development - showing that when a design tells a story, and is presented clearly, it can help others understand why a different approach works.
