Here's an Autumn/Winter Gardening update & tips from our on-site team members, Richard, Tanya and Ali who are busy keeping the grounds tidy and preparing plants for winter, whilst planning for next Spring.
Leaves - love them or hate them? There are plenty around this time of year. They make an excellent mulch, and invertebrates will work their magic to improve the soil. So leave them on your beds. They should be removed from lawns to allow light and oxygen to continue to get through to the grass.
Bulbs - it's not to late to get your bulbs in (i'm pleased about that!) and Tanya told me Tulips are best planted in November when the soil is cooler and helps prevent disease.
Roses - with over 1,000 roses on site we are busy undertaking our winter pruning. This is important for plant health and to ensure they give a great display next year. We cut to an outward facing bud and remove any dead, diseased, crossing or spindly stems. We aum to keep an open 'vase' shape which promotes good air circulation and disease resistance. Why not talk to one of our gardeners on site if you want some guidance? (or comment on the post and we'll get back to you)
Planning - Winter is a great time for thinking about what you want to do with your garden next year. We take photos throughout the year and then look back at these to work out what we might want to make, spaces to fill, plants to be divided etc. We also order plants that won't go in until next year; we already have our new batch of Dahlias scheduled for delivery in February.
Happy gardening!
