CRAZY ABOUT PELARGONIUMS

Our talk next Monday 1 June will be given by Steve Monks, a specialist grower of rare and unusual Pelargoniums. Steve is fresh back from the Chelsea Flower Show (and an appearance on Gardeners' World) where he showed plants from his nursery ‘Growing Crazy’ in Evesham which grows over 500 varieties.

7pm for a 7.30 start, Colwall Village Hall, WR13 6EQ. Plant stall and raffle. Members, no charge, non-members, £8. Everyone welcome.

THE CLIMATE CHANGE

Our next meeting is a topical one! On Monday Sally Morgan, botanist, author and no-dig organic gardener, will reveal which types of gardens and which techniques are best suited to deal with the extremes of climate change.

Sally specialises in drought-tolerant techniques, including aggregate beds, hugel-style raised beds, clover lawns, and water harvesting designed for a changing climate.

Plus a plant stall, raffle and refreshments. Members, no-charge; guests, £8.

SELF-SOWING PLANTS WITH DERRY WATKINS
NEXT MONDAY 6 APRIL, 7pm for 7.30pm start.

A not-to-be missed inspirational talk from plantswoman and owner of Special Plants Nursery, Derry Watkins. Derry will tell us how nature can help us create wonderful gardens if we include self-sowing plants. She will be bringing plants to sell so this is an excellent opportunity to stock up.

There will also be a raffle with a chance to win some great plants, a plant stall and a spring bulb competition for members (see website for details).

Held at Colwall Village Hall, WR13 6EQ. Members, no charge (join for £24pa at the meeting). Non-members welcome, £8. No need to book. Entrance includes refreshments.

CRAYFISH ON THE LAWN, a talk by Joff Elphick

At our next meeting on Monday 2 March, Joff promises to show videos of things we have never seen before! This will include audio from gardening experts and celebrities who love their gardens There will also be photos of interesting plants and other things he has seen in his life as a professional gardener.

Joff has worked for Mary Keen, studied under Chris Beardshaw, worked at the National Collection of Rambling Roses in Gloucestershire, Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons, The National Trust Gardens Department, and as Assistant Head Gardener for Rosemary Verey at Barnsley House. So he will know what he’s talking about!

Talk: THE SELF-SUFFICIENT FRUIT GROWER

Our local homesteader Kev Alviti is passionate about growing lots of fruit on his smallholding and will share his knowledge with us on Monday 5 January.

Kev and his family grow over 70 varieties of apple, 15 plus varieties of plum, loads of damson and bullaces, and dozens of soft fruit bushes.

The talk will start at 7.30pm in Colwall Village Hall. However, do come along from 7pm to enjoy a hot drink and a chat. Free entry for members, £8 for guests.

A reminder that January is the time to renew your membership. Either join at the meeting or visit our website https://wychecolwallhortsoc.org.uk and look under the Membership tab to pay by bank transfer. Annual fee is £24 which includes entry to interesting 11 talks.

AGM and ANCIENT TREES TALK

Join us next Monday for our AGM (all the paperwork can be found on our website) which will be followed by tree expert and photographer Archie Miles talking about Ancient Trees. Archie has photographed many of the country's greatest and rarest trees and woodlands. He is also passionate about his own traditional orchard with its fine old trees. It promises to be an illuminating talk with many beautiful images to savour.

ALPINES IN THE WILD AND CULTIVATION

Join us next Monday 3 November when alpine expert Diane Clement will take us to different altitudes to discover varieties of alpine plants, where and how they grow, and how we can adapt our gardens to grow them.

Diane has been visiting the European Alps for over 40 years to observe plants growing in the wild, and has also travelled on plant hunting trips to Colorado, Turkey, China, Japan and Kyrgyzstan.

CHRIS BEARDSHAW 'PAINTING WITH PLANTS'

We are thrilled that TV presenter and horticulturalist Chris will be giving this year's Percy Picton Memorial Lecture. He will talk us through the evolution of the English Garden style, in particular the development of the herbaceous border, from the earliest incarnations through to 21st century examples.

Monday 6 October, 7pm, Colwall Village Hall. Tickets, £16, must be bought in advance from Helen at Old Court Nurseries (07971 522 891). Entry includes wine and nibbles.

All proceeds will support horticultural students in their studies.

Join us next Monday 1 September to hear Paul Green of Green's Leaves nursery in Newent talk about rare and unusual plants. He will give bring a selection of plants and give a practical demonstration so we can experience how plants please all the senses.
