Outdoor Kitchens: Designing Beyond the Appliance
Outdoor kitchens are increasingly popular — but successful ones are designed as spaces, not installations.
Wind direction, privacy, proximity to the house and evening light all influence placement. Materials must weather well in the North West climate, and surrounding planting should soften without obstructing.
When integrated properly, outdoor kitchens become natural gathering points rather than standalone features.
If you’re considering adding one to your Manchester or Cheshire garden, design the surrounding environment at the same time.
The setting is just as important as the grill.

Shade Planting That Feels Intentional
Shaded gardens across South Manchester can feel difficult — but they’re often the most atmospheric spaces.
Layered foliage, tonal greens, textural contrast and carefully placed lighting create depth without relying on constant colour. Ferns, woodland perennials and sculptural shrubs bring calm and cohesion.
Rather than fighting shade, good design embraces it.
In Victorian terraces and tree-lined suburbs, rear gardens frequently sit in partial shade. With the right planting palette, they become cool retreats during summer heat.
If your garden struggles with light levels, we can design a planting scheme that works beautifully with what you have.

Garden offices and studios are everywhere — but not all feel integrated.
A garden room should sit comfortably within the landscape. That means matching materials, managing sightlines and softening edges with layered planting.
Design the building and the surrounding garden together and the result feels intentional — not like a shed at the end of the lawn.
If you’re investing in a garden room in Manchester or Cheshire, let’s design it properly.

Privacy Without Boxing In
Overlooked gardens are common in newer Manchester developments.
Instead of simply raising fences, layered planting, pleached trees and pergola structures create privacy while maintaining light and space. Direction of views matters more than height alone.
Privacy should feel natural — not defensive.
If neighbouring sightlines are limiting how you use your garden, we can design a solution that restores comfort without enclosure.

Across South Manchester’s terraces and suburban plots, space is often tight — but layout makes the difference.
Diagonal lines, layered planting, subtle level changes and defined zones create depth and movement. Often it isn’t size holding a garden back — it’s proportion.
If your garden feels cramped or underused, a redesign could unlock far more than you expect.
Arrange a consultation and rethink the layout.

Small doesn’t mean limited.
Layout is everything.
Angles. Layers. Defined zones.
Often the issue isn’t space — it’s proportion.

Many gardens peak in June and disappear by October.
Strong evergreen structure, multi-stem trees, ornamental grasses and thoughtful lighting create presence through winter. Good design isn’t about constant colour — it’s about shape and framework.
If your garden feels flat outside summer, it may need structural planting rather than more flowers.
Autumn and early spring are ideal for rethinking the framework.

When the sun drops on a warm summer evening, it’s lighting that keeps a garden alive.
A well-designed lighting scheme doesn’t just help you see where you’re going — it extends how long you can properly enjoy the space. It adds depth, warmth and that subtle touch of drama that transforms a garden after dark.
At our recent Arkwright Road project in Marple Bridge, lighting was built into the design from day one. The water feature becomes a completely different experience at night, softly illuminated and full of movement. Gentle pathway lighting improves safety, while carefully positioned up lights give structure to planting and architectural elements.
Crucially, good garden lighting also strengthens the connection between house and garden. When viewed from inside, the illuminated landscape draws your eye outward, making the garden feel like part of the home rather than something separate.
Lighting should never be an afterthought. When planned properly, it elevates the entire design.
If you’re considering a garden project in Marple Bridge, Stockport or the wider Cheshire area, explore the full project on our website and see how considered lighting can transform your outdoor space.

Water shapes every successful garden — yet it’s the one resource many of us still take for granted. With longer dry spells and heavier downpours becoming the norm here in the UK, capturing and reusing rainwater isn’t just a sustainable gesture, it’s smart garden design.
In our latest Journal article, we look at why rainwater harvesting should be at the heart of every considered outdoor space. From simple water butts to integrated storage systems, it’s about working with nature rather than constantly turning on the tap. The result? Healthier soil, stronger plants, better biodiversity — and lower water bills.
If you care about resilient planting, environmental responsibility, and gardens that genuinely support wildlife, this is well worth a read.

For his entire career, our designer David has talked much about sustainable gardening in terms of plants: drought-tolerant palettes, native and non-native species, pollinator-friendly borders… All of that still matters, of course, but it’s not where sustainability really begins. It begins with wa...

Sunken gardens have been part of landscape design for centuries. From formal Renaissance layouts to Arts and Crafts gardens, lowering a space was a clever way to create shelter, intimacy and a clear sense of purpose. Step down a level and you immediately feel it — calmer, quieter, more enclosed.
That principle still guides how we design at DK Garden Design.
In our Monton project, the sunken seating area forms the heart of the garden. You approach it via a contemporary boardwalk through rich, layered planting, and the gentle descent creates a real sense of arrival. Once inside, it feels protected and inviting without being cut off from the rest of the space.
The lowered level helps improve comfort too, offering a more sheltered microclimate and extending the garden’s usability into cooler evenings. It becomes a natural gathering point, while remaining visually connected to the pergola, outdoor kitchen and surrounding planting.
For us, sunken gardens aren’t about tradition for tradition’s sake. They’re about shaping experience — adding depth, structure and atmosphere to modern outdoor spaces.
The Monton garden was awarded Silver at the 2025 APLD International Landscape Design Awards, a reflection of how historic design thinking can still inform contemporary landscapes.

Landscape Plans: More Than a Planning Condition
If you’ve ever applied for planning permission for a new build or significant renovation in the UK, you’ll know that a landscape plan is often required before work can begin.
Local councils now expect detailed submissions covering far more than planting. Plans can include boundary walls, gates, driveways, materials, levels, biodiversity measures, tree protection and even Biodiversity Net Gain requirements.
In other words, landscape design has become an integral part of the planning process.
Rather than treating it as a box-ticking exercise, we see it as the opportunity to properly knit the building into its setting — resolving level changes, strengthening architectural lines and introducing meaningful biodiversity from day one.
The boundary walls and driveway gates shown here formed part of our successful planning submission for an internationally awarded project in Monton, Eccles, Salford.
With 25 years of experience preparing landscape plans for planning applications across Greater Manchester and Cheshire, we work with architects and homeowners to secure approvals and deliver thoughtful, well-resolved external spaces.
If you have a project that needs landscape drawings for planning, feel free to get in touch.

🌿 Front Garden Design in Delph, Saddleworth 🌿
We’ve just completed the design for this front garden in Delph, inspired by the surrounding Saddleworth landscape and those beautiful views towards the Peaks.
Natural boulders and generous slab steps give the space a strong, grounded feel — something that sits comfortably within the local setting rather than competing with it.
Planting is biodiversity-led, with heathers and wildlife-friendly species chosen to reflect the moorland character while providing year-round interest, nectar and shelter for pollinators.
We designed the back garden for this property a couple of years ago, creating a series of outdoor zones that make the most of the stunning High Peak views. This new front garden continues that story — balancing practical off-street parking with kerb appeal, structure and real ecological value.
Installation starts in late March, so keep an eye out for progress updates and finished photos soon.
If you’re considering a front garden redesign in Delph, Saddleworth or across Greater Manchester, we’d love to explore what’s possible.

Wildflower Meadows in Alderley Edge, Wilmslow & Knutsford
Wildflower meadows are a simple, effective way to bring biodiversity and beauty to underused land across Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Knutsford. In many larger gardens and countryside properties around Cheshire, paddocks and fields are often limited by agricultural or greenbelt planning rules. As a result, they’re frequently left as plain grass with little ecological or visual value.
With the right approach, these spaces can be transformed into vibrant, seasonal landscapes full of colour, movement and life. Carefully designed wildflower meadows support bees, butterflies and birds, improve soil health and create a far richer environment than mown grass. They’re also a practical, lower-maintenance option for managing larger areas of land in a more sustainable way.
From a design point of view, meadows soften the landscape and help gardens sit more naturally within their rural setting, changing through the seasons and connecting the garden to the wider countryside. The image here shows the wildflower meadow orchard from our award-winning project in Alderley Edge, where previously overlooked land now plays an active role in the overall garden design.
If you have fields or unused land in Alderley Edge, Wilmslow, Knutsford or the surrounding Cheshire countryside, a thoughtfully designed wildflower meadow could be the perfect solution. Get in touch to explore how better landscape design can unlock the potential of your land.
