Before ➡️ After

These large boundary sitka spruce had gradually stretched well into the garden — perfectly natural for edge trees chasing the light.

With some branches reaching over 20ft, we’ve carefully removed the extended overhanging growth to restore light and usable space, while keeping the trees healthy and structurally sound.

Still a woodland backdrop.
Just far more garden 🌲

🌲 Tree of the Month: Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris)
A tree that feels unmistakably Scottish, Scots pine stands tall against wind, weather and time itself.

Our only truly native pine, it once formed vast Caledonian forests stretching across the Highlands. Today, scattered remnants still hint at that ancient woodland heritage.

Recognisable by its rugged grey bark below, warm orange tones higher up, and blue-green needles held in pairs, Scots pine develops an open, characterful crown — especially in exposed coastal or upland sites. It’s a tree shaped as much by the wind as by the years.

Ecologically, it’s invaluable. Its seeds feed crossbills and red squirrels, while its rough bark and open canopy support lichens, insects and birds alike.

Long-lived and resilient, Scots pine has been used for centuries in construction, boat building and fencing — a practical tree as well as a beautiful one.

Where do you notice Scots pine in your landscape?

Turns out when I’m busy working in gardens… I often forget to take photos of them 🤦‍♂️

Social media’s been a bit quiet, but we’ve been cracking on with pre-spring tidy-ups and getting hedges and shrubs into shape before nesting season begins.

These crocuses popping up are a good reminder that spring’s not far away 🌱

If you’re thinking about giving your garden a refresh, or have any trees needing attention, just drop us a message.

The same Sitka spruce from yesterday's reel - just safely on the ground.
Next step: “snedding” - has anyone come across that word before? 🪓

It’s always surprising how big even a relatively small tree feels once it’s down and you’re standing beside it.

No brute force required — just a bit of leverage. A turning bar doubling up as a felling lever to help persuade this spruce to go where we wanted it🌲

A decidedly dreich January, with February shaping up much the same... As work wrapped up in a local field last week, a rare burst of sun cast this striking shadow of the neighbouring church, giving one brief suggestion of warmth before fading for the day 🌄

That silvery-green “fuzz” on this tree is lichen — not a parasite, but a tiny partnership between fungi and algae. It gets everything it needs from the air, which is why lichens are a great sign of clean, healthy environments🌱
