🌳 Tree Survey Spotlight – Looking Beyond the Defect
We were recently recommended to a new client by a fellow arboricultural professional after their previous tree surveyor retired. The client was keen to continue taking a responsible approach to tree management and requested an inspection of this mature English oak (Quercus robur).
The survey confirmed a significant internal cavity within the main stem, extending approximately 80cm internally. While defects of this nature can appear alarming, assessing risk requires consideration of the whole tree, not just the defect itself.
This oak was pollarded around 15 years ago, and as a result the current crown loading is substantially reduced compared to what it would have been historically. This reduction in crown mass and sail area means the defective stem is not subjected to the same mechanical demands it once carried.
The inspection highlights the value of periodic tree safety assessments, particularly for mature trees situated close to gardens, buildings and other regularly occupied areas. Defects can develop gradually over many years, and professional inspection allows informed, proportionate management decisions to be made based on evidence rather than assumption.
Tree risk management is rarely black and white. The presence of a defect does not automatically mean a tree is unsafe, but understanding the extent of that defect and its implications is essential for responsible ownership.
