Had a lovely visit to this week. Stunning to see the carpet of snowdrops and the sun even graced us a couple of times, making them glisten 😌 But there are also some amazing vistas throughout the grounds - well worth a visit for anyone interested in gardens and nature

I used to be scared of growing roses but this beauty has completely changed my mind. Rosa ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ is definitely one to add to any border. She is a shrub rose growing up to 1.2m, she has a very long flowering season and will thrive in most soils and most positions. And the scent! Oh my word, I can’t walk past without sticking my nose in a bloom!

Let’s talk Rhododendrons. We’re fortunate enough to have these gorgeous mature rhodi’s in our garden and they’re in full glory right now. Some of them are looking a bit straggly here and there, though, because until last autumn these beautiful cultivars were being out-competed by their highly invasive cousin Rhododendron ponticum. We’re on acidic soil and ponticum was taking over - not good for biodiversity, blocking out light and drying out the ground. So, to encourage a far better ecosystem and to give these much lovelier rhodi’s a chance, the ponticum had to go. Thanks to hard work we have already seen improvements in the growth of new plants which had been dormant but finally seen the light, and also improved growth of existing plants and trees. So, although these beauties have been struggling for a little while, they are still blooming and will now get the chance to really flourish
