Despite the bitter weather, excellent work continues at the orchard.

Fortunately, some of our newer volunteers are seasoned fruit pruners, so the apples are getting a good going over, rather than the vague hack 'n' slash they've received over the last couple of years.

Some serious conifer carnage! Two full days, with significant amounts of weather to contend with, to remove this lot. Very satisfying.

An experiment in soil improvement. This ground is so hard due to the baking hot weather, but also because an inch below the surface it's pure subsoil. My intention is to add a 4 inch layer of manure, mulch it, then return in 6 months. Here's hoping the worms will produce perfect, friable loam in the mean time!

Some of my best and worst jobs.

Pressure washing: a task with a clear beginning and end, split into palatable sections. You unearth some real surprises. And on a hot day, soaked boots = cool feet.

Clearing Krazy Paving: I'm not a violent man, but whoever invented it deserves their own special level of Hell. However, it looks good when (finally) clear.

A lovely new grand project, including formal gardens and an orchard renovation. The most wonderful thing: the clients want to re-use as many of the waste materials from the house as possible. Here, I've cut beds for formal lonicera hedges, mulching with old Axminster and underlay, then top dressing with shredded self-seeder birch. Hessian and wool make excellent barriers 😎

Coronation update: dodging the televisual feast, I thinned out and pricked out seedlings.

- crab apple for the new planned hedge (including this delightful pink number... As these are all hand gathered from local trees, that's genetics at work 🥸)
- two dozen teasels (sadly, I couldn't pot on the lot, there were hundreds)
- loads else - cat mint, cardoon, betony, perennial sunflower, lesser calamint...

Also rediscovered this gorgeous little ground cover plant today and took some rooted cuttings - Kenilworth Ivy.

Not a job not complete in your best suit... This detritus gradually clogged my customers boat slip. What can't be communicated, fortunately, is the sheer volume of SMELL: I don't think I've experienced a more impressive example of anaerobic decomposition! (My customer assures me the booze bottles are not his, incidentally 😎)

Even wild gardens need boundaries; otherwise they just look unkempt. I have to say though, at this time of year I would take a 'lawn' of dandelions, daisies, violets, cowslips, celandines and forget-me-nots over grass any day... Especially during

A week of smooth contours and sharp edges, it seems: in a more traditional, formal garden, a crisp edge to the border and levelled lawn can really make a significant difference.

Examples highlighting the different tastes of different people. The first, a garden given over entirely to nature. The second, manicured with not a blade of grass out of place.
