Low-Maintenance Perennials for Clean, Lasting Borders

Step 1: Choose resilient plants
These perennials keep their shape and color with little care:
Lamb’s Ear, Black-Eyed Susan, Salvia, Catmint, Sedum, Daylilies, Hostas, Coneflower, Lavender, Russian Sage, Yarrow.

Step 2: Match plants to light
• Full sun: Black-Eyed Susan, Salvia, Catmint, Sedum, Lavender, Russian Sage, Yarrow
• Partial shade: Lamb’s Ear, Daylilies
• Shade: Hostas

Step 3: Rely on natural toughness
Most tolerate drought, heat, and poor soil once established. Many resist pests and suppress weeds naturally.

Step 4: Minimal upkeep
• Occasional deadheading or light pruning
• Divide daylilies every few years
• Cut back woody plants in early spring

Step 5: Plant in groups
Use clusters of 3–5 plants for strong borders that stay neat all season.
