Blog: Is it Better to Repair or Replace My Timber Windows?

If you've noticed heat loss, draughts, or moisture ingress around your timber windows, these are signs that you might need localised treatment to resolve an issue and prevent further damage to your property.

But the question is: should you repair or replace timber windows? The answer to that will depend on how well-maintained your windows are, and how long-standing and extensive the damage is. While repairs are often more cost-effective, in more serious cases it might be necessary to replace a window entirely if fungal decay or weathering have caused a window to lose its structural strength.

Learn the pros, costs, and factors UK homeowners should consider before deciding in our latest blog: https://www.timberwise.co.uk/blog/repair-or-replace-timber-windows/

Blog: How to Protect Your Home from Flooding?

You might think it's strange to see us posting about flooding in the middle of summer. However, with the UK set for a week of warm weather mixed with potential thunderstorms, it might be worth thinking about whether your flood defences are in place and effective. Extremely dry soil repels water, making it more likely for groundwater flooding to occur even in an area of low risk.

A house flood can be incredibly stressful, upsetting, and costly. However, there are some ways to minimise the long-term effects, especially if you live in an area at risk of flooding. In our latest blog, we discuss some of these methods to prevent significant damage to your property.

Blog - Working Safely in Occupied Properties: Protecting Residents and the Public

It’s one thing to keep our specialists safe during remedial work. They’ve had extensive training and accreditations, they can quickly identify and remedy the risks and hazards associated with the property care industry, and they understand the impacts improper planning can have on the lives of our surveyors and technicians.

However, that leaves an important question unanswered: how do we extend that protection to our clients, especially when they might not have the same health and safety experience as our specialists?

This week, as part of our continuing health & safety series during National Safety Month, we explore what measures our specialists use to protect the health and safety of our clients, any vulnerable occupants, and members of the public passing by an active work area.

Case study: Woodworm Treatment at Upminster Windmill

Our client, a construction firm in Upminster, tasked Timberwise with conducting woodworm treatment during rejuvenation works on a heritage property.

This property was a windmill believed to have been built during the 1600s. Upon inspection, our surveyor identified two separate infestations from different wood-boring species, both in the timber frame of the property and the timber mechanisms within.

Timber Rot vs Woodworm: How to Spot the Difference

Woodworm and timber rot are two of the most common causes of structural timber damage in UK properties, but they're often mistaken for one another.

While timber rot is caused by fungal decay linked to moisture, woodworm is the result of wood-boring beetle larvae feeding within timber. Both can weaken structural timbers and lead to costly repairs if left untreated.

In our latest guide, we explain the key differences between timber rot and woodworm, common signs and symptoms to look out for, and how each issue affects structural timbers. Understanding the cause of timber damage is the first step towards protecting your property.

How do you protect employees working in vastly different environments?

At Timberwise, health and safety extends far beyond the treatment area.

Our surveyors regularly work alone in occupied homes, our technicians operate specialist equipment in challenging environments, and our office teams help ensure the systems, planning and support structures are in place to keep everyone safe.

As part of our continuing health & safety series during National Safety Month, our latest article explores the behaviours and procedures our surveyors, technicians, and office staff employ to ensure the safety of both ourselves and our clients. Health and safety isn't the responsibility of one department, it's embedded throughout every role in the business.
