Gorgeous way to spend a Sunday putting right something someone else messed up! Tore out a few layers of old landscaping fabric and released the roots of the poor shrubs back into freedom! Defined all the edges with my favourite shade of EverEdge, love how this brown just fades in. Then a good helping of some fresh wood chips, literally steaming inside after all the rain and sun!! Gonna get some grass seed for the gaps and then some lovely Violets for where we’ve had to come short of the haunches.

Looking blooming marvellous down at our project in Ruddington! Back today to add the steel ropes for the green walls now the climbers have started climbing!! Hardy Herb Hedge and the tea garden have all started filling out beautifully!!! All the perennials are getting their feet in, we have so many berries!! Also really pleased to see the annuals going like the clappers!!! Getting a gorgeous display of the Ammi and Molinia at the back, really pleased with how it’s coming on!!

Cutting grass and taking names. New planting to come just getting everything shaped up. The box is going later in the year when we decide on the replacement. Can’t wait to do the Acers!!

Trying to beat the heat this morning prettying up the patio!! Planted this dragon fountain with cascades of Campanula, Veronica and Erigeron. Gorgeous Cistus to complement the acers; I love watching them in the evening dramatically shedding that days flowers. Then some more Erigeron and Bacopa with Namisia for the hanging baskets. Reflects the rest of the space nicely.

Bit of a tidy up on this border I did earlier in the year. Going off like the clappers at the moment and I’m so pleased with how harmonious the colour palate is.

Back to put the standing deadwood into our wildflower meadow in Bridgeford. Wet side coming along wonderfully thanks to a bit of osmosis!! Drier side seems to have felt the full force of the birds, they usually come to this garden for the feeders but they have had to find a different buffet of late!! Still a very good germination rate even if it is a little patchy. Deadwood will serve many purposes here, its sculptural beauty will of course become home to many invertebrates as it breaks down and we have drilled a load of holes for the solitary bees. Birds too will come to use these as sentinel posts, perching here to stand guard whilst flock mates forage when the meadow grows a little more and fills with life then eventually goes to seed. Fabulous to see so much growth from our 9cm in just four weeks, already our biennials are starting to send up spikes and we’re only days away from our first oxeye daisy! Can’t wait to see this develop.

Another beast tamed today! Cotoneaster/Pyracantha mountain and cleared out all the saplings growing up everywhere! Nice to be able to get some light back into the front room. Exposed the beautiful trunk on the Betula but left the ivy up the wonderful Prunus cerasifera for the lovely aesthetic and the wildlife! Few things in there worth keeping, the hydrangeas are quite new but we’ve got some lovely wall flowers and loads of centaurea cyanus but lots of lovely gaps to fill!!

This weather is playing havoc with our ecosystems. Clearing up at a clients today and I found 30-50 dead little bees. Managed to get a few coming back to life after a hit of a drink but it really highlights to me of water within our gardens. Here you can see the pond helped me bring these guys back to life but you can get so many things to put amongst your borders to catch water when it rains (or when you’re flinging it about from your hose pipes!!). Moss too is an important water source for many of our smaller friends, it acts like a sponge soaking up any moisture it can. Love to watch to bees on the mossy rocks by the pond drinking their fill or on the mossy bits of lawns after heavy rains. Water is essential for life, we can only last three days without it, can you imagine how quickly you’d dry up if you were the size of a fingernail??!??!?

Nice to get started on a new project!! Lovely day in the sun yesterday clearing out this understory beneath this beautiful weeping birch. Previous tenants had covered up the bind w**d problem with landscape fabric and gravel so unfortunately a lot had to go to get everything out but we’ve managed to preserve a few things and have kept all the fabulous climbers in tree. Nice to clear a garden before you redesign, you have a chance to get a feel for the place through the day, how the light moves, what thrives naturally and how you want to move through the space.
