Approval Granted!

Planning approval secured for the extension and remodelling of a property within a Conservation Area.

The design reimagines the existing home by relocating the primary living spaces to the first floor—maximising views across the river and open countryside to the south.

A new stair core to the west moves circulation outside the original footprint, unlocking a more efficient and flexible internal layout. The scheme also incorporates photovoltaic panels on the existing roof slopes, supporting a more sustainable approach.

A thoughtful balance of heritage, functionality, and contemporary living.

Project Spotlight: The Old Grammar School (Coventry Transport Museum)

This Grade I Listed 12th-century former chapel and grammar school—also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument—underwent careful restoration as part of the £9.5 million regeneration of the nearby Coventry Transport Museum.

The project involved the meticulous repair of the building’s historic fabric, including the restoration of original lancet windows and leaded glass. Unsympathetic later additions in the rear courtyard were removed and replaced with a contemporary glass entrance, improving access while preserving the building’s character.

Internally, modern services were introduced for the first time, and several bespoke new doors and staircases were crafted to replace deteriorated originals. The result is a sensitively restored heritage building that is now available for private hire, giving new life to one of Coventry’s most important historic sites.

Project Spotlight: Office on the Ropewalk

14 Oxford Street is located on The Ropewalk, at the edge of The Park conservation area. This project adds two compact additional storeys to an existing triangular brick building, carefully responding to both the site's constraints and its architectural context.

All new elements were prefabricated off-site to address the tight site conditions and to reduce construction time and waste. The additions are highly insulated and feature a perforated metal solar screen, designed to let in natural daylight while helping to prevent overheating in the compact interior spaces.

Project Spotlight: Lacemaker's House
Images:

Situated in the heart of Nottingham’s historic Lace Market, the Lacemaker's House was originally a derelict Victorian workshop. Following extensive conversion works, it has been transformed into a sustainable urban home. Spread over three levels, the house features a striking double-height living and dining area, along with three bedrooms, offering a blend of character and contemporary living.

The design integrates a range of sustainable materials and technologies, including photovoltaic panels, grey water recycling, and a combined heat and power (CHP) unit, which generates both heat and electricity from a single fuel source. High levels of insulation have been achieved using natural products, while the construction incorporates both recycled and composite materials. The result is a highly efficient, low-impact home that retains the architectural character of its historic setting while meeting modern environmental standards.

The Lacemaker’s House demonstrates how redundant urban buildings can be thoughtfully reimagined with innovative environmental design to create a distinctive, energy-efficient home for contemporary city living.

Project Spotlight: Mundella Centre

As part of our transformation of the former Mundella School, this project showcases our commitment to unlocking the hidden potential in existing buildings. The school has been carefully converted into a collection of unique and charming Art Deco-style apartments, each celebrating the character and history of the original structure.

Among the standout features are the impressive tall ceilings, expansive windows that flood the interiors with natural light, a secluded cloistered courtyard offering private outdoor space, and distinctive decorative circular motifs that reflect the building’s architectural heritage.

Breaking Ground at 79 Maid Marian Way

A ground-breaking ceremony marked the start of a new project commencing next year, bringing together Revd. Steve Silvester and other members of St. Nic's Church, along with representatives from Architects, , and Focus Consultants. The event celebrated an important milestone in the project’s journey and the collaborative effort behind its delivery.

The scheme at 79 Maid Marian Way will transform an existing two-storey building through refurbishment and new side and rear extensions, creating a new Church Centre with community-focused facilities including a main hall, kitchen, training spaces and offices. Responding to its Conservation Area setting and prominent location, the design introduces contemporary stone-clad elements inspired by St Nic’s Church, contrasted with darker brickwork to create a balanced, unified frontage and a strong architectural identity.

As a practice dedicated to creating meaningful spaces for people and communities, Marsh:Grochowski Architects is excited to be working alongside Scope Construction and Focus Consultants to bring this new Church Centre to life. We look forward to delivering a project that not only serves its community but also enhances the historic context and architectural character of the site.

Project Update: The Grain Store

The development involves the conversion of an existing Grain Store into a single residential dwelling. The site forms part of a wider complex of agricultural buildings associated with an established farm.

The design approach seeks to respect and retain the inherent agricultural character of the existing building. The overall structure remains unchanged, preserving the original form, massing, and scale. External alterations are minimal, with the primary visual change being the introduction of timber cladding to the façade, helping to soften the building's appearance and integrate it more naturally into the rural setting. A small number of new openings provide adequate light and access, while remaining sympathetic to the existing structure.

A key design feature is the introduction of a central lightwell, created by forming an opening in the roof. This external space is open to the elements and functions as a landscaped courtyard at the heart of the building. The lightwell serves multiple purposes: it provides natural light and ventilation to the interior spaces, establishes a visual focal point, and enhances the internal layout by creating a private garden area overlooked by surrounding rooms. Doors at ground level provide direct access to the lightwell, while upper-level windows allow for additional light and views into this internal garden space.

Project Spotlight: Bramcote Drive

This month's featured project replaces an existing single-storey house with a modern, sustainable home designed to meet the client’s long-term needs. Sustainability and low-energy design were central to the brief, with a strong focus on minimising carbon footprint while staying within budget.

The new dwelling adopts a gable roof that mirrors the original pitch of the demolished bungalow, maintaining harmony with the surrounding context. Cross gables and front-facing roof windows help preserve the character of the street scene, while two flat-roof dormers at the rear provide additional internal space without overwhelming the building’s form.
