Rain or shine, good planting earns its place in the garden.

I'm happily planting Geranium 'Splish Splash' today, taking advantage of a break between the downpours. Its fresh white flowers, splashed with violet, bring a lovely brightness to the border and seem to glow after the rain.

This is one of those hardworking plants I return to time and again. It weaves beautifully through a planting scheme, softens edges and, once established, helps suppress weeds naturally.

Good garden design isn't just about looking beautiful on the day it's planted. It's about creating gardens with structure, colour and interest that continue to perform year after year.

🌸 Primula beesiana in flower 🌸
Known as the Candelabra Primula, its beautiful blooms rise above the foliage on strong stems and are loved by bees, butterflies and moths.
At Waulkmill Bay Garden Design, I always try to source hyper-locally, choosing Orkney-grown plants from experienced local growers whenever possible. Better for local businesses, better for Orkney gardens. 🌿🐝

Sneak peek of a project nearing completion in Orkney...
What started as a blank canvas is now becoming a garden full of colour, texture and movement, designed to thrive in our unique island conditions.
A huge thank you to a lovely client for her patience and trust throughout the journey. Seeing a garden come to life is always rewarding, but even more so when it's created to be enjoyed for years to come.
We're nearly there now, with just a few finishing touches before the full reveal. 🌸✨

Snow thawing fast now, gone almost as quickly as it came.
Catching the briefest light between clouds, those soft winter moments that don’t last long enough.
Frost has its gifts though:
kale, leeks, brussels sprouts all sweetened by the cold, richer for it.
Looking ahead to planting many, many metres of native and ornamental willow hedge, for biodiversity, shelter, structure, wildlife, future wind breaks in the making. 🌿
