It is always exciting to see a project move from early concepts and visualisations through to the building taking shape on site. As the materials come together, the character of the spaces begins to emerge, from the tones and textures of the external envelope to the views and connections with the surrounding landscape.

There is something special about seeing the design intent translated into reality.

An exciting new commission on Gower currently taking shape in the studio.

As part of the early design process, we have been developing a physical site model to better understand the unique characteristics of the site and its relationship to the surrounding landscape. Whilst digital tools form an important part of our workflow, there remains something invaluable about working with a physical model to explore topography and the way a new building might sit within its context.

It's always a joy to return to the Gower, a beautiful part of the world where we've been lucky enough to work on a number of projects.

In just over two weeks' time, the LOYN+CO team will be lacing up our walking boots and taking on the Gower Peninsula Mighty Hike!

Covering a full marathon along the spectacular Gower coastline, we are taking part to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, helping them continue their vital work supporting people living with cancer and their families when they need it most.

We'll also be passing a number of projects en route that we have been fortunate enough to work on over the years - a reminder of our connection to this special part of the world.

We recently gained consent for up to 250 new dwellings at Leckwith Quay on the boundary between the Vale of Glamorgan and Cardiff. The houses run alongside the River Ely on the opposite side of the river to the Ely Trail. The house types are designed to reflect the transition across the site from an urban to a more rural vernacular. The developable area of the site was highly constrained by the existing levels and adjacent woodland. The proposal embraces the opportunity of a linear development running in parallel to the river with the woodland backdrop to the west.

The proposal transforms an existing brownfield, under utilised site into a thriving new neighbourhood.

Wonderful to work with such a passionate client whose commitment to quality and detail is visible throughout this project. The client’s determination and long-term ambition for the project ensures that the team’s vision for a modern country house is being realised beautifully.

It is great to see the carefully planned tree planting emerging as it matures alongside the building.

What a glorious day on site in Gower for this bespoke new build family home, tucked into the rugged landscape with beautiful views of Port Eynon Bay. The client has made sure to make a start on the lower West terrace in order to enjoy the best of the evening sun as the project takes shape.

From the archive: unbuilt projects developed for real sites and real briefs.

This thought provoking scheme for five dwellings explored how a collection of houses could emerge from a highly constrained landscape through careful massing, orientation and infrastructure strategy. Rather than being conceived as a single architectural move, the design evolved through a series of smaller responses to different site conditions, resulting in a family of forms that each respond individually to views, privacy, topography and light, while remaining part of a cohesive overall scheme.

An exploration of how landscape, movement and materiality can shape well designed, contextual housing proposals from the earliest stages of design, principles that continue to inform current and future schemes.

Exploring materiality and contextual studies for new buildings within a heritage landscape. We worked closely with to ensure a sensitive proposal that was befitting of its setting.

This area was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2000 as it is one of the best examples in the world of a landscape created by coal mining and ironmaking in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The canal which was built between 1797 and 1812 is an integral part of the understanding of the World Heritage Site as it was the transport artery that served the industry. The broad bend in the canal seen at our site in Govilon was made to follow the contour of the steep hillside to avoid needing locks. Our site sits adjacent to the Listed Embanked Aqueduct, Canal Drain and Dry Dock.

The most sensitive element of the proposed development was the Café at the highest point of the site, bordering the canal and on the extreme edge of the World Heritage Site. Following advice on heritage impact, the design was developed to reduce the heritage and visual impact through its materials and massing. The café is proposed to be erected on a jack pad foundation to minimise groundworks and therefore disturbance to the canal embankment. The scheme was consented in April 2026.

We are thrilled that this unique scheme has received planning consent this week. A proposal for 6no bespoke cabins and a new boathouse café with associated kayak hire serving the residents of Govilon and the surrounding area and visitors to Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal and the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. The existing workshops will be used for craft style / maker spaces / studios.

A very special project for us with a great client and a fantastic team. Huge credit to Sam Courtney at for leading the team through a challenging planning process. Wonderful engagement with AWDURDOD PARC CENEDLAETHOL BANNAU BRYCHEINIOG / BRECON BEACONS NATIONAL PARK AUTHORITY from the very first Pre Application, throughout the application and consultation process and lastly the presentation at committee where the scheme received unanimous support for approval. It has been a real team effort with support from the wider team on ecology, heritage and other constraints associated with the site.

The approval will help make the client’s vision a reality:

“for small scale, landscape led, sustainable, high quality holiday accommodation, combined with a coffee shop and kayak / cycle hire on the canal top. This would really enhance the setting and be a great asset to the village. We plan to create a brand based on the Welsh language and Welsh culture. The brand will be ‘Nyth’ meaning nest in Welsh.”
