Really sad to see this 💔 Anyone who knows Mila’s knows just how good it is. The brownies are INSANE, especially the cornflake one which is my absolute favourite, I must’ve eaten close to 100 over the years 😂 The salad boxes are delicious too and Dean had a baguette from there this week and said it was brilliant.
Please continue supporting them at the Plympton Ridgeway shop! Free parking too (just remember to put your reg into the machine).
Reading through the comments on their post really shows how many small businesses are struggling behind the scenes right now. Social media can make everything look perfect with the photos and posts, but the reality is it’s incredibly hard work and so many businesses are under pressure with rising costs and very little support. We’ve felt it ourselves recently too.
That’s why supporting local businesses really does matter now more than ever. We’d hate to lose amazing independents like Mila’s from Plymouth. Wishing the whole Mila’s team lots of love and support through this tough time ❤️
It is with incredibly heavy hearts that we share some very difficult news, but please keep reading - as there is some light 💗
After an extremely hard few years, Mila’s Bakehouse Limited — the production bakery and depot behind our food vans — will shortly be entering insolvency.
This is not a decision we have taken lightly, and it is without doubt the hardest thing our family has ever faced.
Since 2019, me, my family and the entire Mila’s team have poured absolutely everything into building this business from the ground up. Together, we created something we were so proud of — an amazing brand with incredible customers, a loyal following, growing a turnover to a massive £1.2 million , and a team that became more like family than colleagues.
But sadly, in today’s hospitality and food industry, turnover alone is no longer enough to survive.
Like so many other small and medium-sized businesses across the UK, we have found ourselves in a position where the costs simply continue to rise faster than businesses can realistically keep up with. Ingredient costs, utilities, wages, fuel, VAT, business rates, National Insurance & PAYE contributions, and endless other expenses mean that money comes in and goes straight back out again.
Every direction we turn, there is another cost to absorb.
The reality is that many SMEs are struggling enormously, especially in hospitality. Despite working harder than ever, making an actual profit has become almost impossible for many independent businesses like ours.
Behind the scenes, our family has made huge sacrifices to try and keep Mila’s going. There have been countless months where members of our family went without wages entirely to make sure our staff were paid first. Many of us worked long hours for little or nothing because keeping our team employed mattered more to us than ourselves.
Unfortunately, we have now reached the point where we simply cannot continue in the current structure any longer.
This does sadly mean there will be redundancies, which is absolutely heartbreaking for us. Our staff are not “just employees” — they are people we care deeply about, people we socialise with, laugh with, cry with, and consider part of our extended family. If anyone knows of any jobs available at the moment please let us know and we can pass it on to our team. Our staff are incredibly talented and if anyone employs any one of our team you will be very lucky to have them.
However, we do want to reassure everybody that Mila’s Bakery Limited — our original Ridgeway shop — WILL remain open, and we are currently exploring restructuring options to hopefully continue parts of the mobile food truck side of the business in some form moving forward. Taking the vans on was a huge personal risk on myself, but we believe they still have a future. Please bear with the van’s absence over the next few weeks whilst we steady the ship. We are determined to fight to keep as much of Mila’s alive as we possibly can.
To every single customer who has supported us since day one: thank you. Whether you bought one coffee, one brownie, booked the vans, shared our posts, or supported us week after week — you helped build Mila’s into something truly special, and we will never forget that.
We only hope that one day more support from the government is given to independent businesses like ours, because right now so many good businesses are being pushed beyond breaking point despite doing everything they possibly can. On socials all businesses look like they are doing so well, but behind the scenes everyone is trying to keep their heads above the water.
Thank you for your kindness, support, and understanding during what is an incredibly emotional time for all of us. Please bear with us over the next couple of weeks whilst we work with a team of advisors to help us move forward.
We hope that you can continue to support us, back in our original shop, with a refreshed menu soon.
If you have any commercial/suppliers enquiries please contact Brailey Hicks in Plympton. They are dealing with the process and can be directly contacted on 01752 914410.
With love, Paige, Dan and the Mila’s Team ❤️
