Construction Design Ltd is solely owned and operated by Barry Murphy a Chartered Architectural Technologist with 32 years of experience of working on the Isle of Man. The aim is to ensure delivery of practical schemes and drawings that the contractor can use to build safely and economically without compromising on the architectural appearance. The domestic market makes up a large proportion of the

workload and every client is assured of a personal service with an economic and fair fee structure. Services can include the preparation of planning and building regulations drawings. The drawings produced at building regulation stage are to such a standard to allow most reputable contractors to accurately quote and construct the project. Additional services are always available throughout the contract if required. It's doesn't happen overnight"
It has been well publicised now of the imminent arrival of a New Iceland Food Warehouse to the IOM. Specialist UK based architects, designers, project managers & planners.
Constuction Design Ltd are delighted to have be involved as a local representative in assisting the local client & the UK based team. Over the past year I provided a coordination service for the enabling works required including demolition, asbestos removal, surveying and also being local link with our planning department, but not without help.
Many thanks to those local firms assisting to this stage. Thanks to JCK Ltd for the ongoing demolition, site clearance & asbestos removal with Ferncroft. Safety Management Services for asbestos surveying and Health & Safety for the demolition. IOM Ground Models for Topographical Surveying and Sarah Corlett Planning Consultant for bridging the gap between our local planning department and the UK based planning consultants.
The public feed back to date has been tremendous and looking forward to assisting further to qu**ky get this project out of the ground.

House Extension (Transformation) at Baldrine:
Rear of house extension and new side main entrance completed a few years ago.
My role was the design and obtaining planning and building control approval. In this case I didn’t have a role to play in the project management. Credit to client & contractor for successfully interpreting the design.
As is so often the case, I don’t get to see the completed project until some time after, in this case 6 years after and by means of estate agents’ photos.
But I am really chuffed how this turned out, especially when comparing the before & after photos.

Double Project @ Onchan

I was initially commissioned to do help out with the refurbishment of a single neglected semi-detached house in Onchan. The house had big under-utilized back and side gardens. The builder / developer didn’t need much convincing when I suggested the possibility of building a second house attached to the side. My ambition was to make the new house look as if it was always there and the contractor did a great job in matching up the details on both. The result is 2 good family size houses, both with large gardens.
Really pleased with the outcome!

“Industrial Unit Upcycling”

This is an upcycling project on a big scale.

Constructed in the 1970’s these units leaked, contained asbestos and had zero insulation but were well built with a sound structure & sound steel frame.

Construction Design Ltd provided the idea, the planning, building regs and project management.

We eliminated the asbestos, added new insulated cladding to the roof and walls, new roller doors, windows & doors, new disabled toilets, new LED lighting & new fire alarm system and white painted render to complete the transformation.

Full credit to John @ JT Skillicorn Ltd (Main Contractor) for making this a trouble free project and their sub-contractors Collins Steel (roofing & cladding), Ferncroft (asbestos removal) & Brew & Corkill (electrics).

My thanks to Safety Management Services (Health & Safety), Mike @ Structural Engineering Services and to Terry Johnson for his Quantity Surveying input.

3 New Dwellings @ Isle of Man
Just completed the design & planning stage for these individually designed detached houses on an existing "somewhat bland" residential site.
The client has a great eye for detail and I fully expect the interiors, finishes & landscaping will be top class.
Each house will be highly insulated exceeding all the requirements, with ample solar panels & air source heat pumps....no fossil fuels needed on this site!
The scheme will include lots of new native trees and done without the loss of a single existing tree. We will have new wildflower areas, even creating a new wetland habitat and have included several swift boxes on each house, all attracting wildlife back to the area.
Looking forward to this scheme getting the green light it deserves and seeing our vision start to unfold later in the year!.

“We only want an extension!”
The initial brief for this one was a first floor extension over the garage to provide a new master bedroom and en-suite. The client didn’t need much convincing to allow me to exceed the brief and suggest some changes to modernise the external appearance to reflect their own contemporary internal décor taste.
Really delighted with the result of this, great client and lovely job to be involved with!
Services provide: Measured survey, design concept, Planning and Building Regulations.

Ewan Corkish:
(Construction Design Ltd; February 2000 to October 2008).
Today I travelled to Port Erin to say my final goodbye to this great guy.
It would be disingenuous to simply refer to Ewan as my employee or to myself as his boss....our relationship went way further than that!. For over 8 years he was a my colleague, my teammate, my confidant, my advisor...my friend, a big influence on my life and career.
A great draughtsman, meticulous in every detail, never took a sicky...loyal and stable. I have worked alone since 2008, simply because Ewan was irreplaceable.
His mark is left on so many buildings on this Island, houses, housing estates, hotel, apartments, extensions and office buildings, together we did it all, we made a great team!
It's been at least a couple of years since I last called to see Ewan, my bad & my deep regret!
Thanks for everything Ewan!

Dwelling, barn conversion and sun-lounge extension in Maughold:
A project from a few years back.
Original project was the demolition of a semi-derelict farmhouse and construction of a replacement traditionally styled dwelling together with a conversion of existing barns.
I was later called back to design the contemporary sun-lounge to captivate the stunning views towards Ramsey.

A very Happy Christmas to my clients and business associates. Thank you so much for your valued custom and cooperation in 2023.
Again this year, I will not be sending Christmas Cards but have made a charitable donation instead.
When not busy at work my outlet is photography and 2 of my favourite subjects are wildlife and the sea.
We are fortunate on IOM to be surrounded by both and MWLT work hard to protect and enhance both.
So this year my Christmas donation was a no brainer and is gone to the Manx Wildlife Trust; Marine Appeal.

Sun-lounge Extension Douglas.
Recently completed sunlounge extension on Douglas. This sun-lounge replaced a fully glazed conservatory.
As many will confirm conservatories are generally too hot in summer, too cold in winter and trying to heat a conservatory is pointless and wastes so much energy.
This lean-to sunlounge extension is highly insulated, still bright and airy inside and is usable all year round, a really great addition to this property.
Designed using the same materials of the main house with huge bi-fold doors leading to a huge outside social space. Thanks to Mr & Mrs W for their vote of thanks and for the photos.

Industrial Units Upgrading Complete!
Delighted with the end result of this project, transforming tired/dated buildings into an attractive proposition for any business.

New windows & doors, rendering & external painting, internal decoration & upgrading of electrics & lighting. Not only are the Units freshened up but also benefit from enhanced energy efficiency.
