Mid winter is a great time to plant deciduous hedges. This one is about 18m long with 80 plants of which half is Hornbeam. The rest is made up of Field Maple, Crab Apple, Wayfaring Tree, Spindle, Hawthorn and Dog Rose. Best of all it is a cheaper option than the equivalent fencing - cost of this hedge was about £150 in plants plus one day's labour charge.
The quickest (and cheapest when it comes to labour) planting method was used which is to remove the turf layer and then the bare root saplings are planted in a slit which was then closed. This method works well for the shortest bare root plants; these are 40-60cm tall which establish quicker. While it matures this hedge should make a great wildlife corridor and mini shelter belt in this garden currently laid mainly to lawn.
