Just when you think spring can’t get any better, this tree peony appears.

Sometimes one large pot can have more impact. This one holds 200+ bulbs in layers to flower from early to late spring. Use smaller pots to anchor it and prevent it looking isolated. These are filled with hostas here.

A number of pots planted with the same mixture of bulbs gives a rhythm which is calming.

Every holiday we take turns into a plant identification session - so great to see Geranium maderense in its natural habitat. It grows along the levadas, water courses, in deep damp valleys in Madeira. I grew it once at home, marvelling at how it formed a huge clump, flowered massively and fired all its seeds off in different directions before collapsing into a heap, leaving me with seedlings coming up everywhere!
