My name is Padam Gurung, I was born in Lumjung District in Nepal in 1987. My first experiences as an artist was when I was at 6th grade, I painted a landscape, which later one of my teacher looked at it and asked “ how did you paint this?” and I still remember my answer was “ I don’t know, I just draw what I saw”. Later, I was so fascinated with the transformation of colour when mixing with one an
other. At 10th grade, I was able to win a Inter School Tokyo Suginami Rotary Club’s Art Competition 2003, which was hosted by Tokyo Suginami Rotary Club and co-ordinated by Lions Club of Pokhara Annapurna. My portrait paintings are particularly influenced by old Italian master technique, which is a classical technique of verdaccio. This technique involves the painting of a “dead” layer that establishes the values in the skin tone before the final layer of colour are applied. I believe that being an artist is something that one is born to do an not learned at school, I develop my knowledge and skill through practical experience, learning through trial and error from my own work and self-learning studying the works of other artist around the world as my teachers. I only use high graded materials, so that the product last long and pass down to generation to their loved one. I work primarily in acrylic, oil, charcoal, graphite, pastel and currently work from my small home studio in United Kingdom.
