SOMETIMES A RELATIVELY SIMPLE CHANGE CAN HAVE A LARGE IMPACT ON A ROOM

A good customer of mine has recently had much of her house redecorated by a professional painter and decorator. He did a lovely job, but my customer felt even more could be done to create the impact that she was after.

This is when she began to have me change sockets, light switches, light fittings et cetera, a bit at a time, as budget allowed.

Below are a couple of examples of where I have swapped out the normal white plastic fixings, for something slightly more visually appealing. The cost of doing this is not great, but hopefully you’ll agree that the impact of the change is quite striking.

Do you have any examples of where a relatively small/simple/cheap change within your home has had a really big positive visual impact, that you’d care to share?

HOW LUCKY WAS I?

Driving home after doing a few jobs in Castle Donington, I turned down the Diseworth Road and saw something I’ve never seen before and probably never will again.

There, perched casually on a road sign was a magnificent bird of prey.

I stopped at the car, backed up a bit (it’s electric so no engine noise to disturb it) and manage to take this photo. It just sat there looking at me as if to say ā€œwhat are you messing at human?ā€.

It certainly didn’t seem bothered by my presence, so I just drove off quietly and left it in peace.

AI had a look at the photograph and said it’s a kestrel, and I don’t know enough about birds of prey to be sure if that is correct or not.

If you know for sure what it is, please comment below as I’d love to know.

DETERMINED NOT TO HAVE A STAIR LIFT, BUT FINDING STAIRS A BIT OF A STRUGGLE?

This is the situation that one of my customers found himself in, as he has become increasingly unsteady on his feet. Going up the stairs wasn’t too bad, but coming back down was a bit nerve racking with only one handrail.

The solution was a sturdy banister, fixed solidly to the wall. He now has two things to hold onto while coming down the stairs and told me he feels far more confident and in control.

So that was an easy and quite elegant solution that will hopefully prevent my customer from falling down the stairs and hurting himself.

Do you find yourself doing something that makes you think, ā€œā€¦..this is a bit dodgy!ā€œ, but you keep doing it anyway, without putting a solution in place? Or maybe you don’t know what the solution may be.

Let me know, I may be able to help with some advice.

SINATRA** HAD THE ā€œRAT PACKā€, I’VE GOT ā€œFLAT PACKā€ā€¦

Furniture that needs assembly can be a daunting proposition and, if you’re not careful, it’s all too easy to put a panel in upside down or back to front, or to over-tighten the fixings so the wood chipboard splits and will no longer hold. Ask me how I know🫣. But I learned from my mistakes…..

However, if you approach it in a systematic manner, reading the instructions thoroughly (maybe more than once) and laying out all the components to check they are all there, it should be okay. I find that works for me, anyway.

Here are a couple of photos of my latest projects for a customer; the small bed was from IKEA (Malm), the other was from another company, but the principle is the same.

How do you find building flat pack? Straightforward or a nightmare? Do you have any tips or failure stories you might care to share with me and other members?

** For those lucky people who are too young to know, Frank Sinatraļæ¼, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and a couple of other guys were in a ā€œgangā€ that wore tuxedos, drank martinis, and exuded pure mid-century cool in 1960’s Las Vegas, with rumours of links to the ā€œmobā€. So now you know!

DIY - DO IT YOUR SHELF?

This was a return visit to a customer who had several jobs done on a previous visit.

She was fed up with her shelves in an under stairs cupboard, which she said looked tatty. Being natural pine, they were starting to warp and fall away from the wall as the rawl plugs were coming loose from the plaster.

I try to save my customers money where I can, so I suggested that the cheapest option would be for me to remove them, fit bigger wall plugs and give them a coat of paint; but I think she’d had enough of them and insisted on having them replaced.

Now they’ve been done, I do have to admit that they look much nicer than the others ever would, are wipe clean melamine and will also hold a lot more weight, if needed.

Are there times when you have a cheap fix for a problem, which will do the job, but find yourself saying ā€œSod it, I’m having a new one!ā€? If so, tell me about it and how it worked out for you.

ā€œJUST GIVE IT A LICK OF PAINT – IT WILL BE FINEā€

While looking to quote for repainting a double garage door and its door frame, I pointed out to my customer that the bottom corner of the left hand frame was very scabby and I didn’t like the look of it.

She told me to paint it and not worry about it, but I managed to persuade her that the problem could be quite serious and needed rectification. In the end, she agreed that I should investigate further whilst doing the work and then she would make a decision.

I think you can see from the photographs that she was right to make that choice and I was able to effect a repair that should last for many years.

The important takeaway in all of this is that paint is only as good as the surface it’s applied to and whatever is underneath that surface. I’m sure we’re all familiar with the saying about not being able to apply lipstick to a pig 😊

Have you ever done a sneaky ā€œcover upā€ job that you know really isn’t up to scratch and later regretted not doing it properly in the first place?

What was the situation and what did it cost you (time, material, stress) in the long run?

NOT A CLOSE SHAVE!!

A new customer came to me with a small problem, or more specifically a tiny bathroom sink. It didn’t hold much water and had a single, central tap so he couldn’t get his face near the water to have a decent shave!

He had a specific shopping list. The sink needed to be bigger - but not so big it got in the way when leaving the shower - it needed to have two taps, be modern, but not too modern. And finally, it had to have a proper plug! I wasn’t sure I could tick every box, but eventually managed to find one that fit the bill perfectly, which I fitted for him.

He was chuffed with end results, and I’m glad to report that was the end of his stubble trouble!

Have you ever had problems finding exactly the right fixture or fitting to suit your specific needs? Did you end up compromising or did you find just what you needed?

LET THERE BE LIGHTS!

After several years living with their IKEA ā€œdeath starā€ style light fitting, the customer wanted a change.

They went for a three light fitting and could not make up their mind if it should run parallel with or across the dining room table.

When I came to fit it, I suggested fixing it at a 45° angle and she agreed. Having changed the light fitting, it quickly became clear that the 3 new LED bulbs were too bright, so a dimmer switch was required and I fitted that too. By the way, the lines coming out of each end of the triple light fitting are shadows cast by the middle bulb, not huge cracks!

What do you think? Does it work at this angle or would you have aligned it another way?

UNAPPEALING PEELING CEILING!

Despite being a fairly recent bathroom renovation, the ceiling was peeling quite badly, particularly over the shower cubicle.

Removing all flaky paint, treating all those areas with special paint designed to stop peeling, filling as required then 2 coats of another specialised paint for bathrooms had it looking lovely and ready for use again without appearing to have really bad dandruff!

Top Tip - Remember to air the bathroom as much as you can after a bath or shower, ideally with an extractor fan, or by leaving a window or trickle vent open. Even if it’s only for 10 minutes, it will help prevent mould, peeling paint etc.

Have you had this problem with any of your ceilings? What did you do about it? What products do you prefer? Let me know in the comments….

THE SHED THAT WON’T NEED STAINING AGAIN FOR MANY YEARS!

One recent job was this 10’ by 10’ shed (it’s in Shepshed, so does that make it a Shepshedshed?) that was looking a bit unloved. Rather than using a cheap wood stain like Cuprinol, which will need doing again in a couple of years, the customer agreed with my recommendation to use Sadolin Classic. It lasts so long that I’ll be retired long before it needs to be re-done!

I always use the best products and give the best advice that I can, even if it means I won’t be required to do the job again in a couple of years.
