This photo while in need of severe reconstruction needed very little digital and zero manual cleaning. After planning ahead on how to repair the bottom left corner i started work removing the damage from the rest of the image.
I then sampled and merged a series of textures from the clothing of the other 3 boys and saved it for use in reconstructing the clothing later.
The face was then built up in layers partially by sampling parts from the 3 brothers and also by manually painting some features then blending the 2 processes together. I then softened them a little to give the impression of a younger age.
I then got to work building up the clothing using the sampled textures i created earlier, adding the impression of flowing fabric and painting a collar at the top.
Finally i extracted the heavily damaged background and created a low detail basic backdrop to fit the image.
