The Diary Summary for May 2026
The weather was not bad - cloudy x3, sunny x2, dry, rain/dry, sunny x3, sun/little rain, sun/rain, sun/rain/hail!, sun/rain, cold/dry, rain/dry x3, overcast, rain/sunny, overcast/warm/sun, sunny x4, rain, overcast midgies.
Our 10 hens are giving us around 8 eggs a day though one was going broody we think and her eggs were missing so we stopped letting them out till lunchtime which seems to have worked. Their house gets cleaned every week, they get a lot of greens to eat, we usually let them roam free during the day crossing our fingers they don't get killed by Pine Marten or Foxes.
Harvesting Salads+++, Herbs, Chard for friends, neighbours, local produce sales and Inver Restaurant. We had two sales this month at Glendaruel & Strathlachlan both went well for us selling a lot of excess Plants.
Prep (w**d, remove spent crop, rake flat, mulch with grass cuttings) two rows & plant out 75 more Rainbow Chard.
It's been very hot in the polytunnels when the sun shines so we have needed to water all seedlings and plants.
Volunteers came to help plant out 50 cucumbers, 36 courgettes & 14 squashes, winter squashes, Climbing French Beans, Runner Beans, fix their wigwams, achocha, onion, kohl rabi, beetroot, garlic bulbils, crosnes, mulch with grass.
The small Polytunnel (10x5m) has 124 tomato plants and some unhappy Sweet Peppers. Once a week we water, feed, pinch and twirl them (if you know what I mean).
Shored up some tatties (piling soil over the tattie plants to stop the potatoes going green)
Sowed seeds of salads and herbs, transplanted or repotted seedlings.
General maintenance round the field - hedge trimming, strimming & mowing (fresh grass cuttings make a good mulch), collecting and emptying Inver Compost bins to the Aerobin, Hotbin & wormfarm baths.
We got away for one night in our new campervan we only went 15 minutes up the road but it was lovely. We have housesitters (needed to open and close hen house and polytunnels) at the end of June and will get away for a few nights then.
That's all the major crops in the ground now except the Kale etc we need to remove the black plastic, remove any w**ds, mark out the rows and plant 120 brassica plants, if you'd like to get involved please come along.
