We attended the official opening of the Junior Common Room at Kings College, Taunton by former pupils Abigail Hughes (England Athlete) & James Rew (Somerset & England Cricketer).

The project was a collaboration between Stone + Partners Architecture, Wrencon Limited and Kings College to replace a previously deteriorated cabin with a Common Room space for junior-aged college students, as well as an opportunity for the pavilion to be used as an events space within the overall estate facilities.

The Pavilion was praised for its integration into the college estate, providing excellent views over the cricket playing fields and integrating into the existing landscape with innovative use of ground screw foundations where existing trees had to be retained.

Stone + Partners Past & Present Quiz!

The practice was founded by Harry Stone in Taunton in 1908, and has operated since 1971 as Stone + Partners. Still based in central Taunton, the practice's experience and range covers much of Somerset and further afield across the southwest.

From schools and colleges to hospitals, medical centres, churches, sports facilities, museums and village halls, many of the public buildings the Practice have designed provide the backdrop to life in the region.

See if you can recognise some of the buildings around Taunton that the Practice have been involved with since it's inception in 1908.

We are excited to share photos of the recently completed Kings College Junior Common Room, working in collaboration with local contractor Wrencon Ltd.

S+P were commissioned to produce a scheme design to replace a previous deteriorated cabin with a Common Room space for the junior-aged college student at Kings College Taunton, as well as an opportunity for the pavilion to be used as an events space within the overall college estate facilities. The proposed terrace will overlook the cricket playing fields with an excellent viewing position.

We then followed this up with technical design to construction stage with an innovative construction method involving ground screw foundations, site-built timber frame walls and single-ply roofing. This allowed the construction to continue during term time with minimal disruptions for heavy machinery on site or any air pollution. These choices also protected the trees surrounding the project and allows for the whole facility to be demounted and rebuilt in a new location as required.

Recently completed conversion of the first and second floors above an art gallery in the High Street, Taunton into 4 flats for Summerfield Developments.

As the building is located on the edge of a conservation area and shares a common party wall with an adjacent listed building, the planning process involved a combination of Class G permitted development for the two flats above the art gallery and full planning for the two flats on the second floor.

Existing external rear access stair provided a useful fire escape route from the two rear flats.

S+P were further commissioned to provide building regs/working drawings for the contractor.
