Progress is coming on nicely on this lovely courtyard project! 🌿

Ash (📸) and Charlie have been hard at work laying these beautiful Raj Green Indian Sandstone slabs.

The natural variation in the stone is already starting to come alive, especially with a bit of classic British weather on it! Each slab is uniquely textured, having formed naturally over thousands of years, and those organic tones will really pop once the patio is pointed with mortar and washed down.

⚒️ For this build, we’re using slabs calibrated to 22mm with dressed edges, which gives a beautifully authentic, traditional finish. Because it’s a natural riven stone, it keeps an excellent grip underfoot and is completely frost-resistant—meaning it’s perfectly suited to the British climate and built to last for decades.

Here’s how it came together:

🪵 The Custom Build: A fully cladded, bespoke playhouse featuring a built-in veranda, a solid latched door, and open timber windows perfect for peer-out peepholes, serving drinks from a secret café, or keeping watch from their new backyard headquarters.

🛝The Play Elements: Integrated, heavy-duty monkey bars stretching out over a generous, safe play-grade bark zone, complete with colourful climbing grips and a classic swing setup. 🐒

💪 Built to Last: Every beam was precision-levelled by the team to ensure it easily handles years of active climbing and playing.

✨Design Feature Spotlight – The Corten Steel Water Feature 💧A closer look at one of the core elements in a recent build: a sleek, industrial-style Corten steel water feature.

Positioned perfectly alongside the main walkway, the steel brings a warm tone that beautifully contrasts with the black structural frames. We love using Corten because it is a living material; over the coming months, it will naturally weather from a raw blue-steel to develop a deep, rich rust-orange patina (which has already started), that seals and protects the structure for years to come. 🍂

To ensure the feature lasts a lifetime, the inside of the trough has been sealed with a heavy-duty polyurea coating to completely waterproof and protect the metal from long-term corrosion.

🌿 To make the feature really sing, our team selected 5 different varieties of aquatic plants, repeated symmetrically at each side of the trough. Because these are true marginals, we built a custom shelf below the water level inside the feature to ensure every single basket sits at the exact right depth to thrive. We’ve chosen a stunning mix including the elegant Iris, striking Zantedeschia, and architectural Paper Reed to bring vibrant colour, texture, and natural structure to the water's edge.

🌿Down at the base, we broke up the hard lines of the trough by planting a lush, textured border of Hakonechloa, Pittosporum, Hostas and Ferns, which thrive in the damp, shaded microclimate created by the water.

Swipe to take a walk through this recently completed garden transformation! ☀️🌿

By contrasting sleek, black structural frames and a contemporary dark grey pergola with warm, golden gravel pathways and lush planting, this space now feels like a series of private outdoor rooms.

The structural layout creates beautifully distinct zones—from a shaded seating and BBQ area under the pergola to a sunny walkway bordered by a tranquil Corten steel water feature. We used a mix of dramatic, architectural foliage like tropical banana plants alongside soft, sensory catmint borders to frame the paths and bring the structural lines to life.

Leading directly from the kitchen and running along the back of the house is a stylish patio area in contemporary slate-grey which opens up right onto the fresh lawn.

🛝 Tucked beautifully into the landscape is a dedicated child play area zone, featuring a bespoke cladded playhouse, integrated monkey bars, and a safe play-grade woodchip area.

Get those watering cans ready! 🍅 June is a massive month for the veg patch, and now is the time to be busy prepping plots for a bumper summer harvest.

Here are essential jobs for your greenhouse and veg beds right now:

🍅 Pinch & Feed Tomatoes: Once your first indoor tomato fruits have set, start feeding them every two weeks (we love Tomorite—20ml in a 4.5L watering can directly to the base). Tie up the main plant stem to a cane if required. Don't forget to pinch out those side shoots to keep the plant's energy focused on the fruit!

🫑The Half-Strength Trick: Did you know that same tomato feed works wonders on aubergines, peppers, chillies, and potatoes too? Just drop the dose to 10ml per 4.5L of water for incredible flavour.

🥕 Thin out Seedlings: Thin out seedlings like carrots, parsnips and beetroot. This allows space for the ones left to grow and source water and nutrients. Thinned out beet leaves can be added to salads.

🥗 Succession Sowing: Keep sowing salad leaves for continuous cropping. Small amounts sown often will keep a ready supply going.

🐞 The Aphid Avengers Are Arriving! Following our previous post about Aphids and our Fairy Liquid trick to knock those June aphids off your roses, you might want to pause before your next spray!

Keep a sharp eye out on your rose buds for these funky-looking, tiny black and orange critters. They look a bit like miniature, spiky alligators, but don’t be fooled—these are ladybird larvae, and they are the absolute best friends your garden could ask for right now.

🍽️ Nature's Ultimate Pest Control
Before they turn into the familiar red-and-black spotted beetles we all love, ladybird larvae are voracious eaters. Just one of these little guys can scoff up to 50 aphids a day!

We’ve spotted these little green sap-suckers starting to set up camp. Before you run to the shed for the heavy-duty chemicals, our maintenance team has a brilliant, eco-friendly top tip that we use out in the field.

🧼 The Fairy Liquid Trick. You don't need harsh sprays to keep them at bay. Try this instead:

✅Mix a few drops of Fairy Liquid into a spray bottle filled with water.

✅ Give your rose buds and stems a gentle spritz.

How it works: It doesn't actually kill the aphids—instead, it acts as an irritant, so they drop off!

⚠️ Just a heads-up: Because this is a natural deterrent rather than a chemical nuclear option like RoseClear, you will need to repeat it every few days or after a heavy North Yorkshire downpour. But your garden wildlife (and your soil) will thank you for it!

Unlike traditional Aquilegias with their classic winged spurs, 'Nora Barlow' steps it up with these unique, pom-pom-like double flowers. With its distinct layers of soft pink, ruby red, and pale green tips, it’s an absolute showstopper for late spring to early summer.

💡 Top Planting & Care Tips:

⛅️The Perfect Spot: They love dappled shade or a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon relief. They look fantastic tucked into borders or brightening up a woodland garden.

🌱 Soil Preferences: They aren't overly fussy but will thrive best in moist, well-drained soil.
