Steel work installed to a property in Lofthouse Wakefield. The project came to a standstill for 7 whole weeks due to complications with the design of the steel. The first issue what I uncovered was that the raft detail on the existing house was different to the raft detail on the original extension that was constructed 20 years ago. I discussed this with the local building control and the structural engineers and then a new slimline raft detail was deigned and installed. We had to install steel cages and connect these to the existing rafts and concrete the whole section. Further alterations had to be made as I was unhappy that the steel would be stuck down 385mm below existing ceiling height so the steel fabricator and structural engineer managed to re-design the whole section and through a lot of planning we was able to hide most of the steel in the floor void. A lot of work and planning involved in a small extension, however with a bit of time spent and emails and site visits back and forth the end product was something I was proud of. One side of the property was brick and timber and the other side was block and brick so not a straight forward process. This project took longer than first planned however the finished product looked fantastic. The steel it’s self weighed 915kg the two columns weighed 225kg each and the 4 x small internal columns/supports weighed 65kg each. Some times the contractor has to look at the bigger picture and even though the house won’t be theirs your name will always be associated with it. The attention to detail is a must, things like this won’t come back out once installed. Not all contractors would go to this much trouble, building something that looks great and withstands the test of time is what we as a company strive to do. pwardconstruction

Thought I would give you an insight on the situation I am in, or what I have been in for the past two years.

For over two years now I have been extremely busy with work, so much so that I have tried everything possible to catch up but I just can’t seem to get there.

The main issue is myself so I have nobody else to blame but me. At present I am fully booked up with work until June 2023.

Whilst I am honest with customers on time frames and schedules there is a lot of things that are out of my control. Coming home on an evening after working 12 hours on the tools at 8pm to then start on quotes and invoices is not the ideal lifestyle.

Whilst people may bad mouth my timeframes and how long a project takes to complete, I will be very shocked if anybody can actually bad mouth the standard of work.

Now I have not wanted to post this however, I haven’t been 100% happy with how I am feeling and how I am running my jobs, but after seeing a post today on FB it has finally made me write this.

Seeing a comment stating that I haven’t done a job for someone has really annoyed me. Firstly because the person who put the post has his own company so knows how hard things are, and how dealing with customers, timeframes, staff and materials is hard. The story behind the post is that this particular person had an extension poorly built 3 years ago and me and my team had to take it down earlier this year and re-build the extension. On top of this we found further problems and rectified these to a high standard and also carried out additional work for the client. On top of doing some of the additional work (free of charge because I felt sorry for them) they then wanted some further work done. This happens on almost every project and the extra work is appreciated, however, we don’t always have time to fit it in but we try our Best.

This year on top of the work we have had booked in we have come across extra work in a 3M Deep well, hidden manholes, inadequate plans, inadequate structural engineers details, Construction raft foundations, hidden gas and electric pipes, and wrongly formed steel beams. All what is stated above was not any of my doing but down to the wonderful world of construction.

I know this post is long and boring, but moving forward I think I personally need to be honest with people and inform potential customers that I maybe delayed in actually starting there project.

Moving forward, after June next year I an looking to only be doing one project at a time.

Having to pull my dad out of the retirement after he had been retired for one day is not fair. 😂

Would like to thank all the lads who work for me, sub-contractors, and any customers I have done work for.

Thanks for reading.
