5 Simple Steps to Maximise your Boiler Efficiency and Save Money.

With the rising costs of heating our homes, I wanted to share 5 simple tips to ensure you are getting the most from your boiler in terms of energy efficiency:

1. Ensure your System Pressure is Correct.

(This is normally around 1 Bar when cold, but do refer to your boiler user manual.)

2. Bleed your Radiators.

If you find you have cold spots at the top of any radiators, this is an indication that there is air in the system. They need bled to remove the air and maximise their heating potential. (see the links section for a how-to video.1)

3. Optimise your Boiler Heating & Hot Water Flow Temperatures.

If you have a modern condensing combi boiler, then the lower this temperature the more efficient it will be. However you can only lower it so much, so that it will still keep you warm & comfortable in your unique home. (There is a video on this in the links at the end.)

4. Keep your Boiler Regularly Serviced.

This will keep your boiler working at its optimum efficiency, reduce costly repair bills with preventative maintenance and ensure you maintain your boiler warranty.

5. Consider Upgrading your Boiler Controls.

Smart Controls (with OpenTherm) can save you up to 19% on your energy usage. Even for older boilers, smart controls can reduce gas usage. 3

A full stripdown service for this Worcester Bosch Greenstar. It hadn't been serviced for 9 years! The gasket is supposed to be replaced every 5 years!

Allthough the readings were passable, we thoroughly cleaned the heat exchanger, so the new gasket & electrodes will last the full 5 years.

Back to tip- top condition. How we aim to leave them.

Some Recent Breakdown issues:
a siezed pump we managed to free,
A Leaking Auto air vent,
And a flat expansion vessel rather full with condensation. It held it's charge though, so no need to replace.

A gentle reminder.

This is why regular servicing is important. This system had a lot of corrosion and rust, and needs remedial works. A regular proper service would have spotted this long ago!
