An extract from Beth Chatto's Drought-Resistant Planting:
'I stand often and marvel at the exquisite colours and forms of plants. I suffer for them when drying wind tugs and torments them, bathe with them in the stillness and dampness when we have been blessed with a brief passing shower. Like watching a play we stand enthralled, knowing every scene is short-lived. Then the shears must go in, the spent beauties tidied away to make room for the next act. If we have planted with forethought there should be no shortage of performers.'
