Today I am voting — and thinking about my great grandmother, Hortense Lane, a Suffolk suffragette who stood on a wagon in Woodbridge Market Hill over 100 years ago campaigning for votes for women.

Because of women like her, what was once protest became possibility.

It’s easy to forget how hard-fought that right was, but polling day always feels like a quiet nod across generations.

From a wagon on the Market Hill to a polling station in Suffolk… the thread continues. 💜

For image one I used AI to imagine how the protests in Woodbridge may have looked, picture two is from my family's own collection and shows Hortense on her milk delivery wagon. Picture three is the Market Hill and Shire Hall today and four and five have have a bit more information about Hortense and her "No Vote, No Tax" protests as part of the WSPU in Suffolk.

Mr HH has been busy working on this antique pine washstand today; under the white chalk paint is the original paintwork just peeping through. Layers of history....

Mr HH can't bear to part with it, so, for now, this one's a keeper. As the kids have (at present 😂) flown the nest, it's going in the 'spare' room.

Made it to the first car boot sale post surgery! I think the foggy weather had put a number of sellers off, but still managed to collect a few bits. And the old wicker basket helped Mr HH carry it all... along with, amongst other things, some lovely old linens, crystal glasses, green glass pitcher, set of butter knives.... And you know I can never resist a chicken! Great to be out and about again and now the sun is shining and it's time for a recuperative nap! Jenny x
