Today I am voting — and thinking about my great grandmother, Hortense Lane, a Suffolk suffragette who stood on a wagon in Woodbridge Market Hill over 100 years ago campaigning for votes for women.
Because of women like her, what was once protest became possibility.
It’s easy to forget how hard-fought that right was, but polling day always feels like a quiet nod across generations.
From a wagon on the Market Hill to a polling station in Suffolk… the thread continues. 💜
For image one I used AI to imagine how the protests in Woodbridge may have looked, picture two is from my family's own collection and shows Hortense on her milk delivery wagon. Picture three is the Market Hill and Shire Hall today and four and five have have a bit more information about Hortense and her "No Vote, No Tax" protests as part of the WSPU in Suffolk.
