At Palmstead, we don't just welcome visitors to the nursery...we encourage plenty of pollinator guests too 🐝🌿

By growing a wide range of pollinator-friendly plants, we're helping to support bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects that play such an important role in our ecosystems.

Whether you're designing a wildlife-friendly garden, a public realm scheme or simply looking to increase biodiversity, incorporating plants that attract pollinators can make a real difference.

For more information on plants for pollinators, send us a DM and our sales team will be happy to help with recommendations. Or keep an eye out on the website for those plants which contain the RHS Plants For Pollinators icon.

With the recent hot weather, irrigation becomes even more important 🌿

Across the nursery, we use a wide variety of irrigation methods to ensure plants receive the right amount of water at the right time. From overhead systems to more targeted approaches, each area is managed according to the needs of the plants being grown.

What makes it even better is that the water we use is harvested and stored in our on-site reservoirs and lagoons, allowing us to reuse natural resources while maintaining plant quality throughout the growing season.

It's all part of producing healthy plants while making the most of every drop.

Behind every successful landscape project is a huge amount of planning, collaboration and expertise 🌿

We're proud to support designers across the UK, helping bring their visions to life with quality plants, reliable supply and specialist nursery knowledge.

Here are just a few of the fantastic projects we've had the pleasure of supporting. From private gardens and public realm schemes to commercial landscapes, it's always rewarding to see plants leave the nursery and become part of something special.

A huge thank you to the designers who continue to trust us with their projects.

🌿 Behind the Bark: Jess

Meet Jess, Palmstead’s Technical Manager.

From overseeing pest and disease control to managing bio treatments, irrigation testing and plant trials, Jess plays a key role in keeping the nursery running at its best. Her work combines science, problem-solving and plant production. Ensuring plants are grown in the right conditions, with the right care at every stage.

Starting at Palmstead over 11 years ago as a general nursery worker, Jess has worked across multiple departments and built a huge depth of technical knowledge along the way. Her passion lies in large-scale plant production and finding new ways to improve efficiency, quality and growing conditions across the nursery.

Favourite plant on the nursery right now? 🌿 Agapanthus, especially at this time of year when most things are looking their best.

And one thing most people don’t realise? Jess is constantly scanning for pests and diseases 👀

Understanding plant hardiness can sometimes feel a little confusing 🌿

So we’ve simplified it into an easy-to-follow graphic to help make sense of hardiness ratings and what they mean for planting in the UK.

Whether you’re specifying plants for exposed sites or simply planning ahead for seasonal conditions, understanding hardiness is an important part of choosing the right plant for the right place.

Save this for future reference 📌

Planning for warmer, drier conditions? 🌿

Drought-tolerant plants are a smart choice for exposed sites, urban schemes and low-maintenance planting. With features like smaller or silvery leaves, deeper root systems and waxy coatings, they’re built to cope with less water while still delivering structure, texture and seasonal interest.

Here are some reliable options to consider:

Top 3 Shrubs
🌿 Cistus
🌿 Lavandula
🌿 Salvia (Perovskia) atriplicifolia

Top 3 Perennials
🌿 Sedum (Hylotelephium)
🌿 Euphorbia
🌿 Verbena bonariensis

Top 3 Grasses
🌿 Stipa tenuissima
🌿 Festuca glauca
🌿 Bouteloua dactyloides

Choosing the right plants now means less watering, less maintenance and better performance through the summer months.
