You know how sometimes the best things in life come from our kids making friends? That's exactly how this story began - when our Elvis met PK at Peck Slip School in Battery Park. Those New York days were already special, with Vanessa, our boys and I there while I chased my art school dreams at the New York Academy of Art, but watching these school friendships blossom into family connections just made everything richer. That's how we got to know Danielle, Marc and their daughter PK - through those school pick-ups and drop-offs that turned into real friendship.

So when Danielle shared this photo with me, it felt even more meaningful. It wasn't going to become just any portrait - this was PK, Elvis's friend, this wonderful little girl we'd watched growing up alongside our own son in the busy heart of New York. Each brushstroke felt like I was painting not just her thoughtful expression, but all those shared memories of our families' time together.

I kept imagining Marc's face when he'd see it - how this surprise would mean so much more because of all those layers of connection: the kids' friendship, our New York chapter with Vanessa and Elvis, those precious Battery Park days. There's something so special about art that comes from real life like this, you know? When it's not just a portrait, but a whole web of friendships and memories captured on canvas.

The Archibald Prize was a game-changer for me. I was just finding my feet as an artist, when I was selected as a finalist. It was a complete surprise, but a welcome one. Sometimes, you need that external validation to truly believe in your path.
