A new smart lock we recently fitted for a local restaurant.

Black smart lock on a black door — simple, clean, and it fits the look nicely.

Most importantly, the unlocking feels smooth and easy to use.

Sometimes, that’s exactly what a good smart access upgrade should be:
nothing too loud, nothing too complicated — just practical and quietly doing its job.

Not every smart lock problem starts inside the app.

Sometimes the app, Bluetooth, gateway and passcodes are all working properly — but the door itself is causing the problem.

A smart lock is still connected to a real physical door.

If the door does not close smoothly, if the latch does not line up properly, or if the locking mechanism is too stiff, the smart features will not feel smooth either.

Before you blame the app or the lock, here is one common setup mistake to check:

Mistake 2: The door is not closing or aligning properly

The door may look closed, but the latch or bolt may not be entering the strike plate smoothly.

On some doors, especially uPVC, composite or multipoint locking doors, the handle may need to lift properly before the locking mechanism can engage.

If the door is stiff, slightly dropped, rubbing against the frame, or not closing fully, the smart lock may struggle to lock or unlock correctly.

In simple words:

A smart lock can make access smarter, but it cannot fix a badly aligned door by magic.

Very annoying, I know.
But also very true. 😄

💡 How to avoid it:
Before blaming the app, check the door mechanically.

Ask yourself:

Does the door close smoothly?
Does the latch enter the strike plate easily?
Does the handle move properly?
Can the mechanical key lock and unlock without force?

If you have to fight the door before the smart lock is even involved, the door may need adjustment first.

I’ve written a full checklist of common TTLock setup mistakes and how to avoid them — including connection, door installation, admin account, battery and backup access.

It has been over a year since we first shared the story of why we built Bear & Me.

Since then, many new people have found us, followed us, asked us questions, trusted us with their doors, and introduced us to their friends — and we are truly grateful for that.

So we thought it would be a good time to share our story again.

Bear & Me was never just about selling smart locks.

We started this business because we believe access to your home or business should feel easier, safer, and more in your control. No more worrying about lost keys, late-night handovers, or wondering who still has a copy of your key.

Over the past year, we have learned so much more about the Irish market — the types of doors people have, the concerns people feel about smart locks, and what customers really need before they feel confident making the change.

And one thing has become even clearer to us:

People do not just want a smart lock.
They want the right smart lock, honest advice, proper guidance, and someone they can ask for help after installation.

That is what we want Bear & Me to be.

We will continue looking for good-quality smart lock solutions that suit real homes, real businesses, and real doors here in Ireland — not just products that look good online.

To our customers who have supported us, trusted us, and recommended us to friends and family: thank you. Your support means more than you know.

And to those who are new here — welcome to Bear & Me.

We are happy to have you here, and we look forward to helping more people make access simpler, smarter, and safer.

We’ll also keep sharing what we’ve learned along the way, so more people can choose the right smart lock with confidence.

Let’s make your home and business smarter, together. 🏡🔐

If you’re new here and curious about Bear & Me, I’ll pop our website link in the comments.

Setting up a TTLock smart lock is usually not difficult.

But like many smart home products, one small missed step at the beginning can make things feel much more confusing later.

Maybe the gateway will not connect.
Maybe the app cannot find the lock.
Maybe remote unlock is not working.
Or maybe everything looks fine… until someone is standing outside the door waiting. 😅

Before you blame the lock, the app, the Wi-Fi, or the universe, here is one common TTLock setup mistake to check first:

Mistake 1: Using 5GHz Wi-Fi instead of 2.4GHz Wi-Fi

Many TTLock gateways need a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network to connect properly.

The tricky part?

Many modern routers use both 2.4GHz and 5GHz under the same Wi-Fi name.

Your phone may connect without any problem, but the gateway may still fail during setup.

So if your gateway refuses to connect, the first thing to check is not always the lock — it may be the Wi-Fi band.

💡 How to avoid it:
Before setting up the gateway, make sure your phone is connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network.

A small Wi-Fi detail can make a big difference.

I’ve written a full checklist of common TTLock setup mistakes and how to avoid them — including connection, door installation, admin account, battery and backup access.

One of the most common questions people ask after getting a smart lock is:

“Why can I unlock the door when I’m standing beside it, but not when I’m away?”

Very fair question.

Because it is called a smart lock, many people naturally assume it is connected to Wi-Fi all the time — just like a phone, laptop or smart TV.

But many TTLock smart locks mainly use Bluetooth when you are nearby.

And actually, that makes sense.

A smart lock usually runs on batteries. If it had to stay connected to Wi-Fi all day, every day, the battery would not be very happy. Let’s just say it would ask for early retirement. 😄

So where does the Gateway come in?

In simple words:

Bluetooth is for nearby control.
Gateway helps with remote access.

Bluetooth may be enough if you mainly use the smart lock at home and you are usually nearby.

But if you manage a BNB, rental property, shop, office, clinic or shared space, a Gateway can make a big difference.

A real example: one of our self-service laundry clients no longer needs to drive to the shop every day just to open the door. With a smart lock and gateway setup, access can be managed remotely — saving time, stress and unnecessary trips.

So, do you need a Gateway?

Maybe. Maybe not.

Very helpful answer, I know. 😄

That’s why I wrote a simple guide explaining the difference between Bluetooth and Gateway, when you need one, and when Bluetooth may already be enough.

If you already have a TTLock Gateway and want to set it up, I’ve also written a simple step-by-step guide.

And if you’re still not sure whether you need one, this new article explains the difference between Bluetooth and Gateway in normal human language.

If you’ve been looking at smart locks, you may have seen names like TTLock, Tuya, Smart Life, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Gateway… and thought:

“Wait… am I buying a lock, an app, or a small spaceship?” 🚀

Don’t worry. You’re definitely not the only one.

Recently, I helped a few clients set up the TTLock app on their phones.

When I said, “We’ll use TTLock to control the lock,” their faces basically said it all:

“Sorry… what is TTLock?”

And honestly, I completely understand.

When I first started learning about smart locks, I had the same questions too.

Is TTLock the lock brand?
Is it the app?
Does every smart lock need it?
And why does one simple door lock suddenly come with so many new words?

So I wrote a simple beginner-friendly article explaining what TTLock actually is — in normal human language, not engineer language 😄

In the article, I explain:

🔑 What TTLock is
📱 Why many smart locks use the TTLock app
👥 How it helps you manage users and access
⏰ How passcodes and time-limited access work
📋 Why it can be useful for homes, BNBs, offices and small businesses

For one lock, TTLock is convenient.
For several locks, it becomes much more powerful.

And no, it’s not a spaceship.
It’s more like the control centre behind many smart locks.

A few years ago while travelling around Europe, I stayed in quite a few Airbnb and BNB places.

And honestly?
One thing I kept noticing was how much effort hosts put into simply handing over keys 😅

Some waited up late for guests arriving after midnight.
Some hid keys under flowerpots.
Some used lockboxes and had to send codes back and forth.

I even met an older French couple running a small Airbnb from their family home. They were absolutely lovely — but they admitted the late-night check-ins were exhausting.

And after losing keys twice… they had to replace the entire lock.

At the time I remember thinking:
“Wow… a smart lock would solve almost all of this.”

Now, more and more hosts are using smart locks because they make everyday hosting SO much easier:

🔐 Self check-in for guests
📱 Temporary access codes
🧹 Easy access for cleaners
🕒 No more key handovers
🏠 Better security & peace of mind

And honestly?
As a guest, I LOVE them too 😂

No stressing if my flight is delayed.
No awkward “sorry I’m late!!” messages.
No standing outside in the rain waiting for keys.

Just arrive, enter the code, and relax.

Travel has changed.
Hosting is changing too.

I didn’t go there for the lock.

But somehow… that’s the only thing I remember 😂

------------------------------------------

I was just sitting in a clinic in Taiwan, waiting for my appointment,
scrolling on my phone like everyone else.

Then I noticed one of the doors.

At first I thought nothing of it,
but the handle just felt… slightly different.

Not fancy. Not obvious.
Just a bit off.

So I walked closer (yes I’m that kind of person 🤣)
and realised — oh, it’s a smart lock.

But the interesting part wasn’t that it was “smart”.

It was how natural it felt to use.

Like…
you already have your hand on the handle,
you tap your fingerprint,
and the door just opens.

That’s it.

No digging for keys.
No extra step.

Just really smooth.

And that’s when I realised something.

In places like clinics or offices,
the annoying part isn’t really “security”.

It’s all the small things:

❓who has the key
❓do we need another copy
❓who’s coming in later
❓did someone forget to lock the door

Most of the time, we just deal with it.

But honestly… it’s a bit messy 😅

That’s why I actually like this kind of handle-style smart lock (HALO F168).

It doesn’t look high-tech.
It doesn’t stand out.

But it quietly makes things easier.

Quick question 💡

When you lock your door,
do you need to lift the handle up first?

If not, there’s a good chance your door could work with something like this.

A mum I know realised she needed a smarter lock system…

the hard way 😅

We were chatting the day before about how chaotic mornings can get when you have a toddler and a school kid.

You know the routine:

bags
shoes
snacks
carrying a child
trying not to be late

She said she often either forgets her keys…

or leaves the house and suddenly thinks:
“Wait… did I lock the door?”

And then — almost too perfectly…

The very next day, she came over with her kids. We had a nice chat, everything was going fine…

Until she was about to head home.

Let’s just say…

that’s when things got interesting 👀

(and slightly stressful…)

I wrote the full story — and why this made her (and her husband) rethink their home security completely.

👉 Read the full story here: [link in comments]

Anything that makes mornings even 10% easier…

is probably worth it.

Tag a mum who would definitely relate to this 😅
