Before the sea, Hook Lighthouse waits.
Oil on linen canvas. 80cm x 60cm.
Hook Lighthouse sits on the coast of Co. Wexford, but this is the second time I’ve painted it without the sea in view. The presence of the sea is still there, suggested rather than seen.
There’s something compelling about this place. The playful contrast between the structures, the history embedded in the stone, and the quiet energy that exists there feels very alive to me. The buildings hint at the people who passed through over the years; their work, their lives, their routines, their stories.
It’s iconic and steeped in history, yet more intimate when experienced from within the grounds. This painting of comes from a sense of being present within the place, rather than observing the landmark from a distance.
