Before the sea, Hook Lighthouse waits.
Oil on linen canvas. 80cm x 60cm.

Hook Lighthouse sits on the coast of Co. Wexford, but this is the second time I’ve painted it without the sea in view. The presence of the sea is still there, suggested rather than seen.

There’s something compelling about this place. The playful contrast between the structures, the history embedded in the stone, and the quiet energy that exists there feels very alive to me. The buildings hint at the people who passed through over the years; their work, their lives, their routines, their stories.

It’s iconic and steeped in history, yet more intimate when experienced from within the grounds. This painting of comes from a sense of being present within the place, rather than observing the landmark from a distance.

My latest painting - Summer dusk at The Strand, Cahore. Oil on stretched linen canvas 70cm x 50cm.
This is the follow up painting to 'A pint in Cahore'. Both paintings are part of the same day, the same story. While I was taking reference shots for the 'pint' painting, I stayed for a while with my family, reminiscing about the good times we had there with my late father. As the light began to fade, I wanted to capture this magical time of day, when the summer day is closing out and the warm summer evening is beginning. The tables are empty because everyone is inside (windows open), enjoying their time on the Wexford coast having spent the day perhaps enjoying the beach or crab fishing with kids down the end of that hill towards the Irish Sea, the little pier just about visible at this angle in the distance. Special place, special times.

This painting will be on show in the Hidden Worlds exhibtion for , curated by running from 12th October to 2nd November 2024 in the Westgate Heritage Centre, Selskar, Wexford town.

Approaching Hook Lighthouse. Oil on canvas 80cm x 60.
Situated on the beautiful Hook Peninsula in south east Ireland, stands magical Hook Lighthouse. Built 800 years ago, the world’s oldest operational lighthouse is one of my favourite places to be, and I try to visit a few times a year. For my first time to paint the lighthouse, I didn’t want to paint it as part of a seascape, instead I wanted to capture the 1st time I ever visited the lighthouse and the approach from land.

Driving through the beautiful towns and villages of Wexford, eventually coming out onto the actual peninsula with the Irish sea on both sides, you can almost hear nature breathe. The lighthouse appears as a little dot in the distance. Continuing on driving towards it and as it gradually becomes bigger, it reminded me of an old friend that was waiting to see me, with the kettle on! The surrounding landscape on this drive is so calm and serene. Then you finally approach the last stretch of road and there it is…so strong, beautiful and peaceful. Beside the lighthouse are two lighthouse keepers' houses, nestled like children under the watchful eye of a nurturing mother. This scene is what I aimed to capture in my painting, a testament to the enduring and protective presence of Hook Lighthouse

Meath Square cottages, the Liberties, Dublin 8. Oil on canvas 70cm x 50cm. Painted years ago, there are now new buildings behind these cottages which has changed this scene and urban skyline. I'm so glad I captured it when I did. There is an early evening muted light and inner city atmosphere which was enjoyable trying to capture. Brings back childhood memories...I used to play morning until night in these squares of Dublin 8
