Love is in the air…

How wonderful to be asked to “help” with the flowers for my gorgeous sister’s wedding—help being loosely defined here as me wresting full creative control and not really giving it back.

The bouquet itself was a minimal mix containing only three species: white sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus), the aptly named Love-in-a-Mist (Nigella damascena), and a flick of Curly Japanese Allium for height and a touch of quirkiness—just like my sister.

The ceremony was genuine, beautiful and moving, set in a venue full of hidden gems and eclectic charm.
And….she loved the bouquet. Or maybe she was just relieved to have something to hold onto while her hands stopped shaking.
A tiny contribution to a beautiful day. Congrats Sis.

Buds are budding.
Bulbs are popping.
Snowdrops have shown up whether we’re ready or not.

Camellias are loading.
Magnolia is hovering.
Primroses are quietly getting on with it.

The garden is clearly moving forward.

Now, if the rain could stop raining for a bit, we’d really be in business!

With the (slightly) brighter evenings are starting to get going in the garden again. A reminder that now is the time to cut back your hydrangeas as well as your grasses and perennials for a glorious display later on in the year. Here I have paired them with symphyotrichum 'Little Carlow' which makes a fantastic combination for late summer through autumn

In a garden planted late last year, the evergreen structure is earning its keep even on a miserable day. Strong shapes, clipped forms and winter greens hold a garden together when colour takes a back seat. Seen through glass, the garden becomes part of the interior too — reflections softening boundaries and quietly bringing the outside in.
Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year — here’s to gardens that work hard and look good all year round

A little sneak peak at how I created structure in one of our newly-planted projects

This newly planted summer ’25 garden clearly decided to overachieve, bursting into life just in time for an autumn spectacle. The asters — my perennial partners-in-crime — teamed up with the hydrangeas and ornamental grasses to keep the show going far longer than expected. They’re bravely carrying the colour right into the drearier months, doing their very best to pretend winter isn’t lurking around the corner.

What a joy to be asked to design a Japanese Torii Gate for a garden. These iconic structures are deeply symbolic in Japan – spiritual gateways that represent purification and protection from evil spirits (I think I may need one myself!).

A huge thank you to Morrissey Contracting for their incredible precision – measuring, re-measuring, creating templates, and then checking it all again until it was perfect.

The leaves are turning and the days are getting cosy, which means — THE BAREROOT PLANTING SEASON HAS ARRIVED. It’s the perfect time to get trees and hedging into the ground, giving roots a quiet winter to settle before spring arrives.

Meg, of course, has claimed the best seat in the house to admire the beautiful acer japonicum 'aconitifolium'. Typical.
