Modular form ~

The basic unit of the module is a 12m x 12m square with internal pillared layout and stone retaining wall.

The internal timber frame that supports the roof structure is made up of queen trusses.

The roof is punctured with skylights and the valleys collect water for storage and use.

The walls are made up of insulated timber and the sliding facade is made up of glass and bamboo mesh, which filters the harsh southern sun during summers and traps heat during winters.

Outdoor landscape elements ~

Traditional timber gateways, timber columns for flags and Tibetan butter lamps are used as elements in the landscape.

Landslide prevention strategies are important in sloping sites, and hence has a major effect on the design and treatment of landscape around the building.
A stone riprap coupled with live stakes of plants is used to stabilise the land. Locally available vegetation such as poplars or spicebush are used for the live stakes. This maintains the natural look of the slope while reinforcing the soil to prevent landslides.

Monpa Interpretation Center ~

Illustration showcases the main lobby for the interpretation centre.

A minimal two way truss is used that allows for a large colum free space. The overhanging bamboo mesh facade diffuses the strong southern sunlight during the days while also allowing for cross ventilation.

Gabel roofs collect water through U - shaped channels. Solar panels are fitted on the south facing slopes of the roofs for solar gain.
A north light is placed between two gabel roofs which floods the corridors below with ample light.
