The interiors of the Grelling houses are a testament to the lifestyle and everyday practices of the local farming community.

While documenting these houses, we came across many small yet significant details. Be it in the old traditional incense burning area outside the Gumpa, or in the intricately shaped wooden logs to become hyper-efficient stairs - details were plenty, but always practical. Incidental spaces were also always used, such as the spaces for storing logs for firewood. In some cases, aesthetic touches adorned windows and other openings - even these had a strong underlying material logic.

In a way, it was a wonderfully grounded learning experience for SAVE.

With an average age of 150plus years - the Grelleng houses are lessons in construction technology that is robust, yet surprisingly evocative.

Thick stone walls create a strong base, with lighter wooden framed floors above. Ornate wooden windows replete with crafted details and a large overhanging roof completes the form of these beautiful hill homes.

The interiors of the Grelling houses are a testament to the lifestyle and everyday practices of the local farming community.

There is minimal spatial segregation and the idea of multifunctional spaces dominates. The bukhari (traditional room heater) forms the core of the interior living space, which is also the kitchen and the main social area of the home. A few other spaces are used mainly as storage spaces, sometimes as sleeping spaces.

In warm tones of wood stone and light, the interiors are spartan, simple spaces where simple living is prioritised.

The Malla Kings took the initiative to establish an original musical tradition in Bishnupur. Since the fourteenth century they brought various celebrated musicians from Delhi and introduced the classical “Dhrupad” music tradition in Bishnupur. Bishnupur Gharana follows Indian Classical music yet has managed to establish its own variations and has incorporated subtle local adaptation.
Apart from the classical musical trend Bishnupur also hosts a variety of folk music traditions. ‘Baul’, ‘Jhumur’, ‘Kathakata’, ‘Kirtan’, are some of the popular Bengali oral traditions. These are still practiced around the various religious festivals that occur throughout the year.

The architecture of Bishnupur town signifies a distinct architectural style of India and is being imitated time and again. This particular architectural typology is found only in Bengal (including present Bangladesh) arising out of the sensitive use of the local material – ‘mati’ (prepared earth) and skill of the traditional ‘sutradhar’ (construction guild). The overall form and arrangement are different from the other Indian temple typologies. Temples are usually smaller in comparison and the vernacular domestic architectural style of Bengal.
In order to make the Bishnupur temples very special the sutradhars have incorporated delicate ornamentation in the main façade and in case they extend to the whole temple. In the ornamentation we can also find the daily cores of urban life, their flora, fauna and also indications of other outside influences. The synergy of the structural elements to the main architectural form is the very speciality of Bishnupur temples.
These temples are testimony to Bishnupur’s history. The ornamentations are visual delights to the common visitors providing religious messages to the pilgrims and a source of information to the scholars. This ornamentation is integral to the architectural composition and is part of the structure.
The temples and monuments of Bishnupur town are so important that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has identified eighteen of them for central protection and declared them as architectural monuments of national importance.
