Ever wondered how to design a home near a river that floods?

Well, one way is to lift it. With the use of a light-weight steel structure, we were able to elevate the main living areas and detach it from the site. We were keen to create a sense of lightness , a sense of weightlessness. This we believe is achieved through the striking and highly reflective V shape steel columns.

By elevating the entire house, we are also able to generate fantastic views towards the Mahi River.

Extremely excited for this heroic proposal to lift off. Construction begins soon !

The Private Residences in Indore.

An ensemble of houses on an ancestral property poses both challenges as well as opportunities. 4 residences in the heart of Indore must create spaces that are private for the occupants, yet welcoming to all family members. A play of light and air is intertwined in the in-between spaces. The architectural language is of personal choice ranging from contemporary to classic modernism.

The process from concept to many concepts, to the schematic drawings and final drawings has seen a fantastic involvement of our lovely clients ! More we communicate and gather information the more we can deliver on a truly special project.

This 10,000 sq. ft HQ for a corporate based in Baroda was designed keeping vibrancy, light, and a slew of details in mind. The interior architecture is a response to the dull, minimal and monochromatic interiors one sees nowadays. A workspace must be able to uplift the spirit of its occupants and be an enjoyable place where one spends most of their day. Further, to enhance the human experience lighting design played a critical role in catering to the different user needs and their psychology.

Planning ranges from an open 60 seater workstation area with an exposed ceiling to a more formal senior management cabins with birch wood panelling, a few breakout quiet spaces and a lunch area over looking the city towards the East.

We are thrilled with the outcome and cannot wait to design more workspaces for today’s day and age.

Quite an evening with a stellar audience and a great panel. The 'Next-Gen Panel' hosted by Architect and Interiors India, Vadodara Edition was the first of its kind in my city.

The hot topic in discussion was Monumental Architecture vs Inclusive Architecture.

A few remarks;
Both diametrically opposite approaches to a design problem. One which lends itself to grandeur, larger than life scales and the other placing people at the heart of design. One cannot speak about monumental architecture without remembering the works of Louis Kahn. A great building for him was an exercise in the immeasurable. It is to evoke memories and emotions of the past while respecting the context. Monumental architecture is frozen in time and one can only take inspiration from but not repeat.

As for inclusive architecture or universal design, is a practice in which buildings or spaces are accessible to people of all backgrounds and abilities. The design must be a barrier free space, flexible and should foster growth and comfort. We can think of schools and hospitals that utilize such design ideals. This approach is repeatable and is evidence based.

A monumental building can and should be inclusive but can an inclusive building be monumental ?

A wonderful day spent celebrating the future of our practice. 39 years of KGA is not a small feet by any measure. We have stuck together through thick and thin and continue marching on.

The Incredible Garden Art, Boutique Experience Center is a one-of-a-kind space that provides access to an intriguing world of exotic landscape elements. It is a collection of handpicked plants and trees from across the globe, garden sculptures, water fountains, courtyard elements and landscape installations.

The drama of the architecture responds to the site by keeping the existing Mango Tree as a focal point and also the main entry. It is then flanked by 2 offices and 2 light-weight steel fabricated structures housing the indoor displays.

Strategically, the red steel structures include 14' glazing towards the North and the main road. This not only brings in soft natural light but also creates an attractive facade for people passing by.

Another design decision was to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces creating a sense of openness through the masterplan. As you walk into the site one is greeted by the Mango tree but is also visually directly connected to the main out landscape beyond.

3 friends, 3 houses and a site directly connected to the river.

The challenge lies in renovating and upgrading the 2 built houses while introducing a new house in the center. The 3 of them will share the same property in the masterplan and enjoy the landscape connecting them.

We have ventured into a type of construction we haven't explored much of but are very interested in working with, i.e. rammed earth. Rammed earth has extensive benefits ranging from lower indoor ambient temperatures to it being locally available and also minimises the use of concrete and cement.

A Modern Classical love story.

The design of this private residence in Ahmedabad is in collaboration with eminent British Architect, Professor Robert Adam.

First few images reveal the extensive use of stone and more specifically Gwalior Mint stone. There are approximately 40 different typologies of decorative stone elements like intricate capitals, chajjas, pediments, cornices, balusters, brackets and many more which total to a whopping 400 in total.

We are closely working with stone masons from Rajasthan to prepare the necessary carving and fixing details Samples to be revealed soon.

Planning of the house is centred around an intimate courtyard keeping the architecture inward looking as the house is located in a densely packed neighborhood with developments on 3 sides.

Extremely excited to see this one through.

Proposal for 18 homes in the heart of a sprawling landscape filled with trees and an undulating terrain.

The street edge is characterized of exposed brick and stepped planters. In stark contrast and separated by a courtyard is the living and dining space overlooking a private garden.

The overall site is small but the ideas make it big.

A 2-day 'physical' workshop was conducted in the presence of our clients GSPHC, and our MEPF and Landscape team for the 150-acre Police Training Center near Gandhinagar. This is an excellent way to get the client involved in the process of design.

A Design Proposal for GAIL's First Net-Zero Building.

The video aims at representing some of the key sustainable design elements that were included in our competition proposal for the GAIL Office Building in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, India.

We did not win the architectural competition but did take away immense learning through the process of designing towards a net-zero building. This, of course, would not be possible without our strategic environment consultants AEON.
