Architectural Deep-Dive: Coastal Minimalism & Structural Integration

This conceptual study for a beach stay in Trivandrum explores the rigorous application of minimalist principles within a high-exposure coastal environment. The design prioritizes structural honesty and transparency while adhering to the stringent requirements of a CRZ-III A zone.

Technical Specifications & Engineering:

Envelope & Glazing: The building utilizes high-performance 12mm toughened Low-E glass with structural silicone joints to achieve a seamless, mullion-free aesthetic that minimizes thermal gain.

Framing Systems: The primary glazing is supported by 20mm slim-profile aluminum frames, specifically engineered to withstand high-velocity wind loads characteristic of the Arabian sea coastline.

Foundation & Leveling: A monolithic raft foundation was selected to distribute loads evenly across the sandy substrate, with a Finished Floor Level (FFL) set to mitigate coastal flooding risks.

Vertical Circulation: An integrated spiral staircase (SRC) serves as a central structural and aesthetic anchor, optimizing the internal floor plate efficiency.

Site Engineering: The 1.2-meter wide central pathway is constructed from precision-cast concrete pavers, designed to interface with low-profile retaining walls that define drought-tolerant planting beds.

By utilizing an Integrated Passnet (SRC) system and focusing on a total building height of 7.0m, the design maintains a low-impact profile while maximizing the utility of its 80sqm footprint.

Celebrating Cultural Form through Architecture

I am pleased to share a glimpse of the Namaste India Pavilion, our entry for the Tata Steel Design Competition 2021.

The Vision: "Namaste"

The core concept of this pavilion is the Namaste—a gesture that embodies respect, humility, and the universal connection between individuals. We translated this traditional Indian greeting into a bold, contemporary structure.

Design Highlights

Symbolic Geometry: The sweeping, upward-reaching steel forms mirror the joining of palms in a "Namaste" gesture, creating a soaring entry point for visitors.

Structural Elegance: Utilizing the strength and versatility of steel, the design creates a dramatic silhouette that balances mass with void.

Integrated Spaces: At the heart of the pavilion lies an open-air courtyard centered around a tree, blending the built environment with nature—a core principle of our work at JJ Gomez Architects.

It was an honor to explore how traditional cultural values can be expressed through modern architectural language and industrial materials.

The Power of the Void: The PaT House

Can a simple opening redefine a space?

Completed in 2020, The PaT House was an exploration into minimalist geometry and the interplay of light. This 1,500 sqft residence in Trivandrum focuses on a raw aesthetic where the architecture doesn't just sit in the environment—it frames it.
