For nearly five decades, the Perungudi dumpsite in Chennai, spread across over 200 acres, stood as one of the city’s largest garbage mountains, posing significant environmental and public health challenges.

Today, the site is undergoing transformation through scientific landfill mining and legacy waste remediation, enabling the recovery of materials and gradual land reclamation. Materials recovered during the process are now being explored for new applications, including construction materials and furniture, highlighting the potential of legacy waste to support circular resource use.

At Perungudi, Zigma is carrying out landfill mining operations as part of the broader effort to clear the dumpsite and enable responsible waste processing and land recovery.

Zigma is honoured to contribute to the landfill mining operations at the Ariyamangalam legacy dumpsite, where Soil-Like Material (SLM) recovered through the process is now being studied by researchers at the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NIT-T) for the development of eco-friendly paver blocks.

The study examines the potential of SLM, which forms a significant portion of legacy waste, as a partial replacement for conventional fine aggregates in paver blocks. Initial findings indicate promising results in terms of strength and performance.

It is encouraging to see materials recovered through scientific landfill mining being explored for productive reuse, highlighting the growing potential of legacy waste to support resource recovery and circular material applications in sustainable infrastructure.

Zigma had the privilege of hosting a distinguished delegation of experts from IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati, IISc Bangalore, IIT BHU, and Saahas NGO at the Kodungaiyur Biomining Site on 17 February 2026

The visit provided an opportunity for academicians, researchers, and industry representatives to review ongoing biomining operations and engage in technical discussions on scientific legacy waste remediation, greenhouse gas estimation, resource recovery, and performance monitoring of large-scale municipal solid waste projects.

Technical site visits of this nature are instrumental in bridging research, technology validation, and field-level ex*****on. By enabling direct observation, structured dialogue, and data exchange, they strengthen evidence-based approaches and support continuous improvement in landfill remediation practices.
