Iran Unveiled is a photo project that allows you to experience the country, up close and personal, th

Drawing on Iran’s rich history and homegrown talent, this project aims to address misconceptions about the long-isolated Middle Eastern country and depict a more realistic picture of its people and how they live their lives. The works of 9 prominent artists, most of whom live in Iran, will go on display at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, California. Should the event prove to be a success, the phot

ographs will be exhibited in other venues as well. The subjects of the photographs run the gamut from city streets and architecture to people and culture. The idea is to help distinguish Iran from its image as portrayed by the American media — after all, art is a universal language and can be used to communicate a message that will stay in people’s minds.

I will never forget my first time in Kashan. The sheer level of detail and talent put into these ceilings is just . . . mesmerizing. 🥲 There is no other word to describe it.

What I wouldn’t give to have some tea there next to the howz.

She has such strikingly beautiful eyes. Her stare and smile are so full of wonder, sincerity, and innocence.

There is always a sense of genuineness in Reza’s portraits that we find very attractive.

Early Christmas vibes with this charming young man. 🎄 This one has a bit of an intriguing story.

“When I walked up to him and asked if I could take his photo, he smiled and nodded his head. ‘Yes, sure.’ It was a chilly December night, right around Christmas. When he was finally ready, he wanted to take off his coat, to which I said, ‘No, leave it on.’ I thought he looked awesome in it.”

Saeid would print this photo and have it with him so that the next time he saw the young man, he would give him his portrait. Unfortunately, he never did. That was nearly four years ago.

We hope that wherever he is, he is having a good day.

حال‌وهوای کریسمس با این مرد جوون خوش‌چهره. 🎄 این عکس داستان جالبی داره.

«وقتی رفتم پیشش و ازش پرسیدم آیا می‌تونم عکسش رو بگیرم، لبخند زد و سرش رو تکون داد. «آره، حتماً.» یک شب سرد دی ماه بود، حوالی کریسمس. وقتی برای عکس آماده شد، می‌خواست کتش رو دربیاره، که بهش گفتم، «نه، بذار تنت باشه.» به نظرم اون کت خیلی بهش می‌اومد.»

سعید بعدتر این عکس رو چاپ کرد تا دفعهٔ بعدی که این مرد جوون رو می‌بینه، پرتره‌ش رو بهش بده. متأسفانه، هرگز دیگه او رو ندید. از اون موقع حدود چهار سال می‌گذره.

امیدواریم هرکجا که هست، روز خوبی داشته باشه.

The people of the past sure knew how to make a place feel serene and peaceful.

Can you imagine living here? Sitting by the howz, the evening breeze gently touching your skin, the sound of the birds caressing your ears . . . . Instead of a phone or tablet, you have a book in your hand, your favorite novel, and it is about to reach a thrilling climax.

Life is filled with distractions. Don’t you wish you could be free of all that?

مردم قدیم خیلی خوب می‌دونستن چطور جایی رو بسازن که آروم و آرامش‌بخش باشه.

می‌تونید تصور کنید اینجا زندگی می‌کنید؟ بنشینی کنار حوض، نسیم شامگاهی با ملایمت پوستت رو لمس کنه، صدای پرنده‌ها گوشت رو نوازش بدن . . . به جای گوشی یا تبلت، رمان موردعلاقه‌ت رو در دست داری، و همین‌جاست که داستان قراره به یه اوج هیجان‌انگیز برسه.

زندگی پره از چیزهایی که حواسمون رو پرت می‌کنن. دوست داشتی از همه‌شون رها باشی؟

The garden of Narenjestan-e Qavam, named after the many sour orange trees planted there, is an architectural feat of the Qajar era, with its gorgeous symmetry and refreshing greenery.

The mirror hall, right in the center if you zoom in, is a focal point of the mansion, overlooking the small garden in the foreground that was designed with fountains, date palms, and flowering plants.

While we only see the breathtaking garden in this photo, the exquisite details of the house itself are mesmerizing.

باغ نارنجستان قوام، که اسمش رو از درخت‌های نارنج کاشته‌شده در این عمارت گرفته، با تقارن دلربا و سرسبزی دلپذیرش، یکی از شاهکارهای معماری دورهٔ قاجار به‌حساب میاد.

تالار آینه، درست در وسط تصویراگه زوم کنید، مرکز توجه عمارته و مشرف به کوچک باغ روبه‌رو، که با فواره، نخل‌ها، و گل‌های متعددی طراحی شده.

درحالی‌که ما تنها باغ فوق‌العاده زیبای عمارت رو در این عکس می‌بینیم، جزئیات عالی خود خونه خالی‌ازلطف نیستن.

There is a reason they call it the Pink Mosque. 💞

The Nasir-ol-Molk mosque, mostly known by its nickname, is one of the most elegant architectural jewels of southern Iran. A visit to Shiraz would certainly not be complete without a stop-over at this gorgeous mosque.

You are definitely going to want to go there early—as soon as it opens—for two reasons. The light magic happens at breakfast time, shining in hues of blue, yellow, pink, and red, all thanks to the colorful glasses inside the prayer hall. And, obviously, it is going to be much less crowded if you go early.

یه دلیلی هست که بهش مسجد صورتی می‌گن. 💞

مسجد نصیرالملک، که خارجی‌ها اون رو با نام مسجد صورتی هم می‌شناسن، یکی از گوهرهای چشم‌نواز معماری جنوب ایرانه. سفر به شیراز قطعاً بدون دیدن از این مسجد فوق‌العاده زیبا کامل نمی‌شه.

خب، بریم و داخلش رو ببینیم؟ 🤩 عالی. ورق بزنید!

قطعاً می‌خواید که صبح زود از اینجا دیدن کنید—به محض اینکه ورود بهش باز می‌شه—به دو دلیل. جادوی نور صبح اتفاق می‌افته، با انعکاس طیف‌هایی از آبی، زرد، صورتی، و قرمز، به لطف شیشه‌های رنگی‌ای که درون سالن عبادت وجود دارن. و، به‌طبع، اونجا کمتر شلوغ خواهد بود اگه زود برید.

The Moghaddam Museum in Tehran is one of those extraordinary places that leave you in complete awe because of its remarkable architecture and setting. It is without a doubt one of the most prestigious and celebrated museums in the capital—one that everyone should see at least once.

The house belonged to Mohsen Moghaddam: a painter, an archaeologist, and a professor at Tehran University. He, in fact, designed the Tehran University logo, which we love and cherish to this day. He and his wife, Selma, lived in this very house until the early 1970s. (Swipe left to see photos of them.)

If you live in the city, or if you ever find yourself here, consider giving this place a visit.

موزهٔ مقدم در تهران از اون جاهای خارق‌العاده‌ست که فضا و معماری بی‌نظیرش هیبت خاصی بهش بخشیده. بدون‌شک یکی از پرمنزلت‌ترین موزه‌های پایتخته، و هر کسی حداقل یک بار باید اون رو ببینه.

این خونه متعلق به محسن مقدم بوده: نقاش، باستان‌شناس، و استاد دانشگاه تهران. درحقیقت، نشان (لوگو) دانشگاه تهران طراحی ایشونه، که هنوز هم بر سردر دانشگاه باقیه و از صمیم قلب دوستش داریم. او و همسرش، سلما، تا اواسط ۱۳۵۱ در همین خونه زندگی می‌کردن. (ورق بزنید تا عکسشون رو ببینید.)

اگه تهران زندگی می‌کنید، یا اگه زمانی خودتون رو در این شهر یافتید، حتماً سری به اینجا بزنید.

If you have ever been to Qeshm—Iran’s largest island in the Persian Gulf—then you have probably come across these ferries that take you from Bandar Abbas to the island and back. 🌊

The trip takes anywhere between thirty minutes to an hour, and it can be most fun if you get a window seat. ✨😌

اگه قشم رفته باشید، که بزرگ‌ترین جزیرهٔ ایران و خلیج فارسه، احتمالاً با این کشتی‌های تندرو برخورد داشته‌اید که شما رو از بندرعباس به جزیره می‌برن و برمی‌گردونن. 🌊

سفرش چیزی بین سی دقیقه تا یک ساعت زمان می‌بره، و می‌تونه جذاب‌ترین باشه اگه صندلی‌تون کنار پنجره قرار گرفته. ✨😌

Can you guess where this is?

Since we are so fair (Right? 😌), we will even give you a hint, but don’t swipe to the next photo just yet: It is a mosque, a charmingly beautiful one, and we miss it dearly.

Is it possible that we love and appreciate the art of the past more simply because it looks like nothing we would ever see today? Art, it seems, is starting to lose its appeal.

می‌تونید حدس بزنید اینجا کجاست؟

ازاونجایی‌که خیلی منصفیم (مگه نه؟ 😌)، یه راهنمایی هم بهتون می‌دیم، ولی فعلاً عکس بعدی رو نبینید: اینجا یه مسجده، یه مسجد بسیار زیبا و دلبر، که دل ما براش خیلی تنگ شده.

آیا ممکنه که هنر گذشته رو بیشتر دوست داریم و برامون ارزشمندتره صرفاً چون شبیهش رو در عصر کنونی نمی‌بینیم؟ هنر امروز، به‌نظر میاد، داره جذابیت خودش رو ازدست می‌ده.
