Carbon Ideas Ltd

Carbon Ideas Ltd CAD|CAM Solutions for Life
CARBON Ideas, established in 2008, is a basis to examine the emerging ideas into real projects.

We design and fabricate for architecture and applied arts in all their scale from a chair to a building. Carbon dares to accomplish all of them as the idea challenges to ameliorate the building environment. This Teheran based firm explores new ways to develop design concepts by means of its exclusive digital fabrication laboratory. It is not just about ideas but also creating the objects which was

not possible through classic methods before. As an instance we modeled and built unique enormous urban model s via digital techniques when it was asked by a client and in another case we introduced an idea of a flexible lighting fixture which could be formed to different shapes when needed. We modeled it, made a mould and finally produced it with a flexible casting resin. Also when the subject was to design a building’s facade; the studio decided to make an adaptive skin responding to all aesthetic, climatic and urban needs through a holistic concept. CARBON processes the plans considering all factors engaged from aesthetic objectives to functional necessities, from climatic needs to urban rules. Carbon regards to each new issue as an opportunity to answer the requirements in a manner that guarantees the sustainability of its context.

A design-fabricate workshop, Rediscovering traditional fabrication language

As a result of fast growing developments of computer-aided manufacturing technologies, now there is almost nothing impossible to be built. In the near future, common housings will be printed by rapid prototypers and Robots will construct high-rise towers everywhere. This revolutionary movement would potentially cause a rebirth of quasi-traditional construction methods and will again empower Non-standardized crafts which were debilitated by growing International style and its soulless mass-production.

Reusing traditional construction language by means of new cutting-edge technologies could result in developing a new grammar of fabrication. The program tries to experimentally explore in vernacular shapes and the way they were built to reproduce a new generation of shapes. They would have characteristics from the past and would be built in future.

Bio-hack Academy II
Build your own bio lab
Tehran-Amsterdam | Sep-Nov 2015

The age of personal biotechnology is upon us! Engineers have turned biology in a design discipline and it’s now up to us to shape it’s applications. After completing this second Bio-hack Academy you can grow your own fuel, food, filaments, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, fungi and much more funky bio stuff at home. We’ll teach you how to join the bio revolution and build your own Bio-factory.

Learn how to design, grow and extract your own bio-materials using only Open Source hardware you fabricate yourself. Whether it’s a new type of bio ink, bio polymer or bio fuel, we’ll show you can grow it yourself and share the results with others.

The BHA2 Bio-factory series consists of 10 classes. Step by step we construct all the necessary machines you need to run a bio-lab. Along the way you will learn how to operate them. In just 2.5 months we will build up our own bio-factories together. Every week an online lecture from Amsterdam will be given. You will also have access to the CARBON FabLab during 2 days a week to build equipment, conduct experiments and get the support you need. The lectures will give you insight in what kind of tool we are building and it’s usefulness in the lab. You may choose to either replicate the design of the tutors, improve it or build your own device from scratch. It’s up to you how sophisticated things may get.

The program is a hands-on boot-camp. By the end of the course you and your fellow class mates will be turned into fully equipped bio-hackers, capable of growing a broad range of bio-materials and ready to continue production independently at home.

What’s next After the Academy has been completed, you will receive a BHA Bio-factory certificate. The project wiki and YouTube channel will be opened to the public to share the results with the Open Source biotech community. In possession of your own Bio-factory, you may continue to advance your production skills, engage in directed evolution experiments, produce bio gas, purify water, just to give a few, Bio has no limits!

Greg Lynn is the head of Greg Lynn FORM, an architecture firm known for its boundary-breaking, biomorphic shapes and its embrace of digital tools for design and fabrication.

Greg Lynn talks about the mathematical roots of architecture -- and how calculus and digital tools allow modern designers to move beyond the traditional building forms. A glorious church in Queens (and a titanium tea set) illustrate his theory.
