🌿 A Commemorative Landscape in Seoul 🇰🇷
In the heart of Seoul, a new public realm project is taking shape—an evocative commemorative space dedicated to the Republic of South Korea, honoring national partisans and embodying the ideals of peace and democracy. Designed by BCHO Architects (Korea) and Ecotopia (Italy), the project carefully weaves history, symbolism, and nature into a meaningful experience.
✨ Key Spaces & Symbolism
🔹 At the entrance, a landmark sculpture stands as a powerful symbol, seamlessly integrated into a landscape that embraces the concept of Kintsugi—the beauty of repairing the past while acknowledging its fractures.
🔹 The Sunken Garden, a tranquil rain garden, fosters reflection, enriched by diverse vegetation, water elements, and a dynamic topography.
🔹 The Rear Forest & Walking Paths offer a layered experience—from a wild natural zone to a structured landscape inspired by traditional Korean gardens, culminating in an open plaza for public gatherings.
The landscape design enhances movement and perception, guiding visitors through a journey that symbolizes loss, resilience, and the pursuit of freedom. Engraved within the space, thought-provoking quotes from Han Kang, Nobel Prize laureate in Literature 2024, remind us of the enduring cost of freedom and the importance of memory.
This commemorative space is more than a park—it is a living tribute to history, where nature, architecture, and words converge to honor the past and inspire the future.
