A very important event we attended a while ago , a first of a series curated by and . A presentation of the .eu Initiative was the base for an engaging and passionate discussion of why its argument is so important and how to make it possible.

“Today, buildings are treated as investments rather than spaces for people to live in. Due to financial speculation, millions of square meters sit empty and ruined or are demolished and replaced: from functioning family homes to abandoned industrial and office spaces. For real estate speculators, every building is up for demolition!
By 2050, we will have demolished 2 billion square meters of existing space in Europe. This is the equivalent of half of Germany’s building stock and more than Paris or Berlin in their entirety. Instead, we will have built billions of square meters of new space as a replacement for what was already there. This practice creates social, economic, environmental, and cultural problems as demolition comes with a loss of homes, jobs, energy, and history.”

HouseEurope! is the European Citizens’ Initiative for new EU-laws that prioritise renovation and adaptation over demolition and reconstruction by making renovation and transformation more easy, affordable and social.

Casa L

The couple who bought this apartment had just moved to Italy and they contacted us as they wanted to turn it into something that really reflected their character and made them feel at home. Whilst the bathroom needed to be renovated to fit a bathtub, we also suggested the demolition of the kitchen wall to create a luminous open space living area where you could see all the windows together. From there we worked on re-styling the whole apartment through a strong involvement of the clients in the choice of materials, the colour scheme and the furniture. We used a bold colour scheme to characterise each space while keeping the main colour of the walls white to bring in as much light as possible. We chose a mix of modern design pieces and old wooden furniture to warm up the space and plenty of plants to bring life to it.

La coppia che ha acquistato questo appartamento si era appena trasferita in Italia e ci ha contattati perché desiderava trasformarlo in uno spazio che sentissero loro e che riflettesse davvero la loro identità. Oltre alla necessità espressa di ristrutturare il bagno per inserire una vasca da bagno, abbiamo suggerito la demolizione della parete della cucina per creare un luminoso open space per la zona giorno, permettendo così di avere una vista d’insieme su tutte le finestre. Da lì, abbiamo lavorato al restyling dell’intero appartamento coinvolgendo attivamente i clienti nella scelta dei materiali delle finiture, della palette di colori e dell’arredamento. Abbiamo utilizzato una palette di colori forti per caratterizzare ogni ambiente, mantenendo però il bianco come colore principale per massimizzare la luminosità. Abbiamo scelto un mix di pezzi di design moderno e mobili vintage in legno per scaldare l’atmosfera, e come sempre, piante per portare vita agli spazi.

Un forum ispirato dalla presentazione del libro “Fare assieme” che lancia un manifesto per nuovi servizi pubblici che stimolino la rigenerazione del tessuto sociale. Questi possono essere trasformati perchè rispondano ai bisogni dei cittadini ricostruendo la dimensione collettiva e mutualistica. Perchè “facendo insieme, si generano significati.” ( A. d’Elia)
Curiose di leggere il libro ( dopo aver imparato moltissimo da tutte le pubblicazioni di Ezio Manzini) e speranzose che si vada nella direzione per cui queste dinamiche, già esistenti come episodi “eroici”, possano diventare sistemiche.

A forum inspired by the presentation of the book “Fare Assieme” which launches a manifesto for new public services that stimulate the regeneration of the social fabric. We can transform public services so that they respond to citizens’ needs by rebuilding the collective and mutualistic dimension. Because “by doing together, sense is generated.” (A. d’Elia)
Looking forward to reading the book, (after having learnt so much from all other Ezio Manzini’s publications) and hoping that we will move in a direction where these dynamics, already existing as “heroic” episodes, can become systemic.

Un libro che risuona particolarmente: dall’approccio all’architettura come suggestione-ricerca-scoperta-intuizione, al suo scopo, quello di portare cura e di “incidere”, al cambio di prospettiva necessario di come ci identifichiamo su questo pianeta.
Mario Cucinella ci racconta come sia diventato architetto, ci espone i suoi pensieri sulla responsabilità della disciplina, e di come li abbia espressi attraverso i suoi progetti, esplorando un elemento fondamentale del progettare, quello dell’empatia.

A book that resonates fully: from the approach to architecture as inspiration-research-discovery-intuition, to its purpose, bringing care and making an impact, and the necessary shift in perspective regarding how we identify ourselves on this planet.
Mario Cucinella shares how he became an architect, presents his thoughts on the responsibility of the discipline, and explains how he has expressed them through his projects, exploring a fundamental element of design: empathy.

Forum Inequalities, Triennale Milano

A late post about an inspiring event we attended in September. The conference was a whole day of presentation by all the curators, designers, scholars, researchers and experts that will be involved in the 24th International Exhibition . A very diverse collection of projects and points of view, each one to look into in more detail when they will be presented at the Exhibition, but the event itself was definitely an exceptional way to open a debate on how the challenges we are facing will impact the community and its inequalities.

Un evento stimolante a cui abbiamo partecipato a settembre. Un’intera giornata di presentazioni da parte di tutti i curatori, designer, studiosi, ricercatori ed esperti che saranno coinvolti nella 24a Esposizione Internazionale . Un insieme di progetti e punti di vista molto diversificato, ognuno da approfondire quando verrà presentato durante la mostra, ma l’evento in sé è stato un modo eccezionale per aprire un dibattito su come le sfide che ci troviamo davanti impatteranno la comunità e le sue disuguaglianze.

As part of the presentation of the course Off-site Technologies for Architecture by Manni Group, Francesca Singer from SANAA presented the project for the Bocconi University Campus in Milan.
The challenge SANAA took on was that of creating educational spaces with a sense of intimacy, whilst constantly maintaining a relationship with what is happening outside. The buildings of the campus, built around a public park, each have their own courtyard: through their form and the choice and research of materials and their transparency, there is a constant relationship between the interior and the exterior, between the life of the building and the life of the city, so as to never lose sight of the sense of the context.

Nell’ambito della presentazione del corso Tecnologie Off-site per l’Architettura di Manni Group, Francesca Singer di SANAA ha presentato il progetto per il Campus dell’Università Bocconi di Milano.
La sfida raccolta da SANAA è stata quella di creare spazi educativi con un senso di intimità, mantenendo pero’ costantemente un rapporto con ciò che accade all’esterno. Gli edifici del campus, costruiti attorno a un parco pubblico, dispongono ciascuno di un proprio cortile: attraverso la loro forma e la scelta e ricerca dei materiali e della loro trasparenza, si aprono ad un rapporto costante tra l’interno e l’esterno, tra la vita dell’edificio e la vita della città, per non perdere mai di vista il senso del contesto.

Office C

The renovation of this office in a historical building in the centre of Milan was designed with future adaptability in mind, allowing it to be easily converted into a residential apartment with minimal intervention. The original finishes were carefully restored to highlight the building’s historical character, complemented by new elements and colors chosen with the client that create a more contemporary aesthetic.

La ristrutturazione di questo ufficio in un edificio storico nel centro di Milano è stata studiata per consentire una futura conversione in appartamento con un intervento minimo. Le finiture originali sono state ripristinate per valorizzare il carattere storico dell’edificio ed i nuovi elementi e colori sono stati scelti insieme alla cliente per legare il tutto in un’estetica dal carattere più contemporaneo.

Book Launch at the : “The Therapeutic Power of the Maggie’s Centre. Experience, design and wellbeing,
where architecture meets neuroscience” by Caterina Frisone.
Anyone who has experienced any of the Maggie’s Centres first hand, knows exactly what this book is about: the feeling as you walk into the space, the emotional response the architecture produces. “The design here is a form of care”
Caterina Frisone here expands her Phd research into a book that investigates how this was done in the design of Maggie’s Centres, as an example of an approach for any kind of architectural project. Looking forward to learning a lot from this book.

Chiunque abbia sperimentato in prima persona uno qualsiasi dei Maggie’s Center, sa esattamente di cosa tratta questo libro: la sensazione quando si entra nello spazio, la risposta emotiva che l’architettura produce. “Il design qui è una forma di cura”.
Caterina Frisone qui amplia la sua ricerca di dottorato in un libro che indaga come sia stato raggiunto questo risultato nella progettazione dei Centri Maggie, come esempio di approccio da cui imparare per qualsiasi tipo di progetto architettonico.

La Città Autistica_ Alberto Vanolo
Un manifesto per la progettazione di città - e della società - piu’ inclusiva, dove i luoghi non vengono piu’ solo creati attraverso la narrativa dominante della contrapposizione di esigenze di chi è neurotipico e chi no, ma dove “lo spazio urbano puo’ essere immaginato come un immenso contenitore di occasioni di apprendimento”. Portandoci con sé nell’esplorazione della città insieme al figlio autistico, Teo, ci rendiamo conto di quanta responsabilità abbia lo spazio nel sostenere, o amplificare, le difficoltà che gli individui neurodivergenti possono dover affrontare. Lo spazio inteso non solo nel suo significato fisico, ma nel suo potere di esercitare un impatto sull’esperienza del mondo delle persone, inclusi “aspetti che hanno a che fare soprattutto con il contesto, e in questo senso riguardano l’organizzazione, il funzionamento e le atmosfere sociali della città”.

A manifesto for designing more inclusive cities - and society- where places are no longer created solely through the dominant narrative of opposing needs of neurotypical individuals and those who are not, but where “urban space can be imagined as a vast container of learning opportunities.” As he takes us with him on explorations of the city with his autistic son, Teo, we realise how much responsibility space has in supporting, or amplifying, the difficulties that neurodivergent individuals may face. Space understood not only in its physical meaning, but in its in its capacity to shape people’s experience of the world, including “aspects that primarily relate to context, and in this sense pertain to the organisation, functioning, and social atmospheres of the city.”

Lo Spazio non è Neutro. Accessibilità, disabilità, abilismo_ Ilaria Crippi
Questo libro ci apre gli occhi sulla prospettiva di chi subisce in prima persona le manchevolezze dello spazio, che è stato inevitabilmente progettato per essere così com’è. Capiamo come le barriere architettoniche siano così una delle manifestazioni di barriere meno fisiche, create dalla mentalità e da precise scelte. Una riflessione fondamentale sul nostro mondo, non solo per i progettisti, e “su cosa si potrebbe fare, forse, per renderlo un pochino più giusto.” Grazie per aver scritto questo libro.

Space is Not Neutral. Accessibility, Disability, Ableism_ by Ilaria Crippi
This book opens our eyes to the perspective of those who directly experience the shortcomings of space, which has inevitably been designed to be what it is. We understand how architectural barriers are one of the manifestations of less physical barriers, created by mentality and specific choices. It is a fundamental reflection on our world, not only for designers, and ‘on what could perhaps be done to make it a little fairer.’ Thank you for this eye-opening book.

“…the spaces we pass through are not neutral or “natural,” but are the result of specific choices, including economic ones. It is possible to critically look at the ideas upon which these choices are based: they are related to the model of normality we have in mind, which is an ableist model. These are ideas about who the expected, legitimate participants of the spaces are; about which needs it is essential to respond to [...] and those that can instead be ignored or at least postponed to better times.”

L’Empatia degli Spazi. Architettura e Neuroscienze_Harry Francis Mallgrave

Un libro densissimo di concetti che riporta i vari percorsi, attuali e del passato, di ricerca sul nostro rapporto con l’ambiente, costruito e naturale. Attraverso la disciplina delle neuroscienze, Mallgrave argomenta quanto sia necessario avere un approccio architettonico non più dominato dall’estetica prettamente visiva e riapre domande fondamentali quali: “A quali livelli si dispiega l’esperienza architettonica? Che relazione instaura con il rapido cambiamento delle condizioni culturali? Quali sono le implicazioni della digitalizzazione nella progettazione, e come potrebbero i progettisti accogliere o impiegare meglio queste nuove tecnologie? La creatività e il giudizio estetico sono appresi oppure sono radicati biologicamente nei nostri comportamenti? Perchè abbiamo siffatta aspirazione a produrre quel livello qualificato di eleganza estrema che chiamiamo maestria? Dove sta l’”arte” nella cosiddetta arte del costruire?”

The Empathy of Spaces: Architecture and Neuroscience by Harry Francis Mallgrave

A densely packed book of concepts that explores various current and historical research paths regarding our relationship with both built and natural environments. Through the discipline of neuroscience, Mallgrave argues for the necessity of an architectural approach that is no longer dominated by purely visual aesthetics and revisits fundamental questions such as: “At what levels does architectural experience unfold? What relationship does it establish with the rapid changes in cultural conditions? What are the implications of digitalisation in design, and how might designers better embrace or utilise these new technologies? Is creativity and aesthetic judgment learned, or are they biologically rooted in our behaviors? Why do we have such an aspiration to produce that high level of extreme elegance we call mastery? Where does the “art” lie in the so-called art of building?”

“Human Spaces. Digital Cities”, part of the series organised by and , discussed different aspects of digital data in urban space. The way data is created, collected, and processed is tied to the question of “for whom?” and “for what purposes”: a strong potential for improving more inclusive urban space inevitably brings with it the risk of abuse of power by those who exercise control over data.

“Human Spaces. Città Digitali”, parte della serie organizzata con e , “Città Digitali” ha parlato di diversi aspetti dei dati digitali dello spazio urbano. Il modo in cui i dati vengono creati, raccolti, ed elaborati è vincolato alla domanda del “per chi?” e “per quali fini”: un forte potenziale per il miglioramento dello spazio urbano piu’ inclusivo si porta dietro così un’inevitabile rischio di abuso di potere da parte di chi esercita il controllo sui dati.
